Usernames, passwords and email addresses, allegedly from hacks into the Pakistan Army and other government websites, were leaked onto the internet. The link to the data dumps are currently blocked in Pakistan, but screengrabs circulating online show private data including names, contact information and worryingly, designations of a sensitive nature including arms manufacturers. Messages included with the leaked data said the attacks were taking place because the Pakistan Army was carrying out an operation in North Waziristan.
Affected sites
Pakistan Army (.joinpakarmy.gov.pk) (still down)
Pakistan Air Force (paf.gov.pk, Pakistan Air force (Now working)
Inter Services Public Relations (ispr.gov.pk) (Now working)
Federal Investigative Agency (ia.gov.pk) (Now working)
first we must "commend" the Network security team of Pakistan army for failing to prevent this security breach. while we bicker over the reasons to prevent this data theft.
Then we must try to understand the severity of this incident.
the lives of thousands of military and security personnel can be at risk that are taking part in the operation. both themselves and their families that will be identified.
if the relevant leaked information is used by both the local and global terrorists then the implications can be regional or worldwide.
who would believe that sensitive information related to strategic weapons is secure?
these hackers have just brought this PTI/PAT "protest" to a very critical mass level . their actions show that they are with the TTP when it comes to North Waziristan operation.
worrying part is that the hackers have been able to repeatedly and for the second day running been able to hack into the database of state institutions.
the results of these breach will be apparent one day. its a shame that an institution that prides itself for being professional and best among the state institutions has not fared better than the civilians.
although FIA is not a military setup but nonetheless not less important due to the fragile security situation in Pakistan
please discuss, I invite all members to discuss what threats or opportunities they see for Pakistan and their countries and how this leak (with relevant information) can be used by terrorists in the future terrorist attacks in the region and beyond.
