These MDUs (mobile detection units) are not very effective when dealing with certain amounts of military grade explosives however they will easily detect large amounts of crude explosives, weapon cache, etc... and as mentioned before : "everything is welcomed if it saves life"

are their any detectors who can detect explosives from a range, few hundred meters to kms? I read once some where!

Portable explosive detectors are also used. I have seen one on a police checkpoint.

Gamma Ray bomb detection trucks were also used during the swat operation on dargai road near mardan.
