London: In what's being claimed as a key breakthrough, scientists have found a cure for acne -- breast milk and coconut oil.
An international team, led by California University, has discovered that a key ingredient found in both breast milk and coconut oil -- lauric acidlauric acid -- has acne-fighting properties, the 'Daily Express' reported.
Now, the scientists hope to begin the trial of a new face cream, whose base is formed from lauric acidlauric acid, on humans soon.
And, according to the scientists, the new treatment will have absolutely no side effects because it comes from natural products unlike current treatments which can cause redness and burning.
"It's a good feeling to know I have a chance to develop a drug that could help people with acne which afflicts more than 85 per cent of teenagers," the British newspaper quoted lead scientist Dissaya Pornpattananangkul as saying.
She has also created a sophisticated delivery system that keeps lauric acid active until it is applied to the skin and can target the acne, based on "nanoparticle bombs" -- microscopically small chemicals in the cream.
Professor Liangfang Zhang, who helped with research, said: "Precisely controlled nanoscale delivery of drugs could significantly improve treatment of skin bacterial infections."
