Diesel and gas power stations throughout Saudi Arabia will gradually be replaced by nuclear generators over the next decade as the country develops greener sources of energy.
Abdullah Al-Shahri, governor of the Electricity and Co-Generation Regulatory Authority, made the announcement on Wednesday (November 14th), confirming the government's new focus on renewable energy.
"The Kingdom is moving toward adopting nuclear and renewable energy including solar and wind energy as the global studies have confirmed their profitability, and hopes to achieve the transition in the next ten years," he said.

These movements appear to conform with remarks made by Prince Turki Al Faisal Al Saud in October that Saudi Arabia wishes to be 100 per cent reliant on renewable energy sources within a few decades.
In the meantime, Mr Al-Shahri urged consumers to adopt energy saving policies in a bid to cut electricity bills and curb demand in the face of the Kingdom's rapidly expanding population.
