Saudi-led military alliance to formally shape up by end of next year

KARACHI: A two-phase strategy has been devised to formalise the alliance of Muslim militaries cobbled together by Saudi Arabia in December 2015 to fight the growing scourge of terrorism and extremism in the Muslim world, Daily Express has learnt.

Informally, Pakistan is a part of the alliance, commanded by former army chief General Raheel Sharif, but says it will take a formal decision in the matter after terms of reference (ToRs) of the alliance are finalised.

Iran is known to have opposed the Saudi-led alliance because of its serious differences with the oil-rich kingdom over the unrest in the Middle East, particularly in Syria and Yemen.

“In the first phase, ToRs of the alliance will be finalised, while a joint military force will be shaped up in the second phase,” one Islamabad-based source said. “The alliance will comprise air, ground, and naval forces.”

The alliance was announced to check the growing threat of terrorism and extremism following the emergence of Islamic State, or Da’ish, in the Middle East which had declared a caliphate on large swathes of land in Iraq and Syria.

Military alliance not against any specific country, says Saudi envoy

Sources say the member states would devise short and long term policies.

According to them, Saudi officials are using diplomatic channels to communicate with officials of the member states on the formal formation of the military alliance.

The alliance will be formally unveiled at a grand meeting in the Saudi capital of Riyadh by the end of next year, according to sources. Civil and military officials from the member states will be invited to the meeting.

Saudi military alliance: Pakistan seeks to find a middle ground

“The alliance will have its own intelligence, training, and communication systems, as well as weaponry,” another source told Daily Express. “Deployment of forces will be decided in the second phase.”

Pakistan’s involvement

Although Pakistan is informally part of the alliance, the country will make a formal announcement after the formation of its ToRs. Islamabad believes the alliance should not be against any country rather it should work to fight terrorism and extremism in Muslim states.

This alliance is need of an hour, New wars are on the Horizon in middle east, and Shia and Sunni needs to sit together for the greater good of their people .. Turkey and Pakistan needs to step up to bring Iran into the fold

100% agree if that happens there will be no war in ME

This alliance will not be stable. Saudi Arabia is becoming hostile with some of it's neighbors (Yemen, Qatar, Lebanon, who next?) and has pissed off half of the mid-east. They are too unsystematic and lack proper diplomacy.

Atleast trust the leader, Gen RS, if not the alliance. A concern is using american made weapons wherever they are required whether in some other country.

.
But against who does the Saudi's want this alliance to be ? Since Extremists funded by them are on the back foot from Syria to Iraq.. What would they be fighting ? Will Pakistani's fighting on behalf of Saudi's be gunned down by weapons provided by Saudi's ??:pop:

Its the basis of a future multi alliance defence pact

Reasoning given is terrorism but it really is being set with an eye on creating a powerful multi state military able to defend muslim world

They are going for the best with an eye on inducting more and more local weapons over time

Lol.. Good luck with that, Say why wont the Muslim world with your benevolent brotherhood ask the Saudi's nicely to stop funding Islamic extremists from killing thousands of fellow Muslims all over ? Might be able to save a shyt load of money that they then could actually use for better purposes

Oh wait, But they want Pakistani's to provide their bio metric data to Indians, In order for them to visit Mecca

Some alliance that is..

You gotta start somewhere

Muslim population is heading towards 2 billion +, must start its defence plans

Against whom really ? Neither the US and the West or Israel will never attack Saudi Arabis, They're political and strategic allies... Unless Vanuatu has some grouse against the "Muslim" world

You gotta start somewhere

Yep a good start would be to stop funding and arming religious extremists who kill more Muslims than rest of the world combined

Who says what will happen in the future, who the enemies will be.

Waiting doing nothing is pointless, as the strength of individual countries grows eg GCC, Egypt, Pakistan, Turkey, Indonesia etc its a good idea to start pooling that strength and raising an army (I believe initial will induct 24000 troops)

From a Pakistani perspective its a good route to create more influence in the future
