Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir urged on Thursday the international community to assume its duties towards the Palestinian people and support them in regaining their legitimate rights.
He declared during an emergency Arab League meeting on the recent developments in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that Saudi Arabia’s support for Palestine is constant and it has never changed since the time of the Kingdom’s founder King Abdulaziz al-Saud.
The Arab League foreign ministers were meeting in Cairo to address the United States’ relocation on Monday of its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and the ensuing protests on the Gaza border that saw some 60 Palestinians killed by Israeli troops.
Jubeir said that the relocation was a dangerous violation of international agreements and United Nations Security Council resolutions and a major setback to peace efforts.
The unjustified move is a provocation of Arab and Muslim sentiments around the world, Jubeir added.
He stressed that the Palestinian cause is the central cause for Saudi Arabia, hailing in this regard Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz’s dubbing of the latest Arab League meeting as the “Jerusalem Summit.”
The meeting was held in late April in the Saudi city of Dhahran.
Jubeir also highlighted Saudi Arabia’s donation of 200 million dollars to support UNRWA and Islamic heritage sites in Jerusalem.
Furthermore, the minister expressed the Kingdom’s strong condemnation of Israeli forces for targeting unarmed civilians, saying the international community has an obligation to protect the Palestinians people.
The Arab foreign ministers agreed at the end of their meeting on taking economic and political measures against any country that recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
They also demanded the launching of a probe to investigate the crimes committed against the Palestinian people in Gaza.
