SAUDI Arabia has been supplying Syrian rebels battling the regime of President Bashar al-Assad with arms bought from Croatia, according to The New York Times.

Citing unnamed US and Western officials, the newspaper reported that the Saudi-financed "large purchase of infantry weapons" was part of an "undeclared surplus" of arms left over from the Balkan wars in the 1990s and that they began reaching anti-regime fighters via Jordan in December.

That was when many Yugoslav weapons started showing up in YouTube videos posted by rebels, it said.

Since then, The Times added, officials said "multiple planeloads" of weapons have left Croatia, with one quoted as saying the shipments included "thousands of rifles and hundreds of machine guns," as well as an "unknown quantity of ammunition."

State Department deputy acting spokesman Patrick Ventrell said he had seen the reports, but was not in any position to comment on whether they were true.

"You know where we've been on this issue, going back a long time. We provide non-lethal assistance to the opposition. Other countries have made other decisions, and those are their sovereign decision," he said.

A spokeswoman for the Croatian foreign ministry told The Times that, since the start of the Arab Spring, the Balkan country had not sold any weapons to either Saudi Arabia or the Syrian rebels. Saudi and Jordanian officials meanwhile declined to comment, the newspaper added.

The Times said Washington's role, if any at all, was unclear.

However, it quoted one senior US official as describing the shipments as "a maturing of the opposition's logistical pipeline."

Rebels have been fighting Mr Assad's regime since an uprising against his rule erupted in March 2011 and now control large parts of the country, especially in the north. According to the United Nations, the fighting has claimed 70,000 lives.

On Monday, Syria's opposition cancelled a planned boycott of an international conference on the conflict, to be held in Rome on Thursday, after appeals from Britain and the United States.

The Syrian National Coalition said Saturday it was withdrawing from the 11-nation meeting and planned visits to Washington and Moscow in protest at the world's silence over the mounting civilian death toll in Syria.

KSA is doing it's role in اhelping oppressed Arabs and Muslims. Well done Saudi Arabia..

Helping create a safer world, One "Afghanistan" at a time.
Next time MB protests in Jordan, lets send them some weapons too!

Didnt realize that gaddaffi and asad where non arabs and not muslims.

Apparently they do not have the "halal" certification approving them as Muslims from the House of Saud!

Of all the people the west could have backed to take power from the shah of Iran it was Khomenei that they backed on the sole purpose of getting the sunni-shias to fight. The sunni states got paranoid about the allegiances of there shia citizens and and Khomenei rhetoric about a greater shia state. With saddams attack on iran it just made the whole thing worse.
The "long game" has to have a total shia-sunni war in which both parties weaken themselves to such a state that isreal can carry out its "renovation" of masjid al aqsa.
A slow fragmentation of muslims nations is taking place....Iraq,Libya,Syria,Lebanon ect all will be nations in name only but will in actual effect be sub nations (Kurdistan-sunni iraq-shia iraq)with there own little govt and weak armies.
With the saudis backing the "rebels" they think they can control things but it does not work like that.....how long before these same groups go after the saudia and there friends in the GCC?

LOL...........

LOL...........

and did you figure that by yourself?
The betting on a sunni-shia war is like betting on a losing hores and the americans realized that. The shias are not even one third of the muslim world. The only real war that could destroy muslims is a sunni verses sunni war. I pray to Allah that this never happens, but it looks like we're heading towards it. Not because of saudi money or "Al-Saud phobia" thingy going 'round this forum. But because of the world's top power working day and night to achieve, and thanks to our ignorance things got easier for them. What harm could have happend if all the islamic countries threw assad when they knew that he is no way staying as a president instead of waiting out for syria to be vanished? and you attack the GCC for trying to end this nightmare?

Mark my words, he will come back sucking up to us and Syrians. We are used to it, he supported FSA, then Bashar, then FSA, and now Bashar, never mind, ignore him.
