RIYADH: Finance Minister Ibrahim Al-Assaf on Saturday signed three contacts worth SR2.34 billion with Saudi Arabian Railway (SAR) to implement a number of projects related to the North-South Railway.

Beginning from Riyadh, the 2,750km railway reaches up to the northern border town of Hudaitha passing by Sudair, Qassim, Hail and Al-Jouf. It also links the phosphate and bauxite mines in Jelamaid and Baitha with industrial plants in Ras Al-Khair, Jubail and Dammam.

The contracts were signed to establish five passenger stations; a maintenance complex in Naeeriya and 36 maintenance workshops, a technical support office and housing units for maintenance staff.

These kind of news makes me feel that every one is making Fun of Pakistan :hitwall::hitwall::hitwall:

If I am not wrong, this is the high speed rail project in Saudi Arabia.

We are connecting the entire country with railways this 2750km railway line id just the north-south one. There is the north-west one. The east-west one. The west-south one. and the north-east one all currently under construction.

It is supposed to connect our industrial cities with each other and to docks also passengers and some go through military cities.

Congratulations Saudis. A good railway network is the backbone of any country's economy.

I can understand your feeling, Ghulam Ahmed Bilour Said, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia don't have railways but look both countries are going for massive railway expansion. Even Tiny country like Bhutan is getting Railways.

It seems there is no connection with the neighbouring countries. If this railnetwork can connect with UAE rail and Egypt rail, then a container offloaded at Dubai port can be transported all the way to Mediterranean Cost (provided one is ready to overlook the small part of the rail passing through Israel)

There is a plan to build a bridge over the Tiran strait from SA to EG, and if there is one made for railway traffic too, then there is no need to go through Israel.

Actually currently there is work going on in reconstructing the railway between Madinah and Istanbul. Saudi Arabia will have direct railway connection to Europe through that Railway. However the project is facing hurdles because it has to go through Damascus and Syrian government has opposed to this project even though both Turkish and Saudi governments offered to pay for it themselves.

Actually they finally decided to build it to move the phosphate from western north (tabuk region) to riyadh, that is the main reason, why the phosphate factory are not built in the north west? i dunno but as i know from the corrupted leadership we have they want any thing expensive near them as much as possible.

By the way Saudi Arabia is holding the largest phosphate reserves in the world and it is still unexploited, when it is exploited it should give a very good boost to the Saudi Arabian economy.

Is that High speed Rail of 300-350km or it is conventional rail line supporting speed up to 200km/hour. Also, are you facing hurdles in laying rail tracks in Desert, we too have rail lines in Thar Desert but I really don't know how much expensive it is to lay rail lines in desert.
