Just the blouse and a skirt are the traditional clothing in Kerala state in Southern India. So you guessed right.

I don't think so. There are tribals in India who wear the sari but without the blouse. I think @padamchen and @Joe Shearer can throw more light on this.

But there is also the possibility that the sari is of Greco-Roman origin, derived from their garment called Toga, brought to India when Alexander's army came here and later Roman traders.

Sahri is covering your body with unstiched cloth so I think this dress originated from every part of the world
When stiching wasn't popular or wasn't invented covering your body with unstiched cloth was the only option
