Sailen killed in 'gunfight' with RAB | Bangladesh | bdnews24.com
Khulna, Nov 3 (bdnews24.com) -- Sailendra Nath Biswas Sailen , head of the extremist organisation New Biplobi Communist Party, was shot dead in what RAB called to be a 'crossfire' early on Saturday.
RAB- 6 official Lieutenant Commander Nur-e-Alam told reporters that Sailen, 48, was killed when a RAB team raided Salua Bazar area near Rangpur union of Dumuria upazila in Khulna around 3am on information that he and his associates were meeting there.
"Sensing our presence Sailen his associates opened fire at us. Sailen received bullet injuries when RAB fired back on them in self-defence," he added.
"Doctors at the Dumuria Health Complex declared him dead when he was rushed there in a critical condition."
Alam said they recovered a pistol, a revolver and six rounds of bullet from the scene, and added that a RAB car was also destroyed in the 'gun-fight'.
Sailen was a marked top criminal by police in the southern-western region. He had succeeded New Biplobi Communist Party founder Manoranjan Gosai alias Mrinal after his death.
The RAB official said Sailen had recently returned to Bangladesh after hiding in India for about one year.
Dumuria Police Station Officer in Charge Mohammad Moshiur Rahman told bdnews24.com that the West Bengal police had arrested Sailen seven months ago for his involvement in criminal activities and he was sentenced to two months in prison by a court there.
"He came to Dumuria recently after spending two months in prison in India. He used to run his organisation from there," the OC said.
As many as 21 cases had been filed against Sailen at the Dumuria Police Station only. The charges included murder, kidnapping and robbery.
