Sadiq Khan 'set to win London mayoral race'

give me a link then.. people say same thing about corbyn.. when he said stuff about IRA or Hezbolla. What he said and the time and context was different, but tories made it 'national security' issue. Seriously, thats an hyperbole, if you consider Corbyn a threat to national security. this is one way to shut up the opposition though.

Corbyn is a disaster as Labour chief.

It's true even Asian policemen are the worse son's of bitches out there (proper jobsworth) not fair at all!

may be, he is not a national security threat, is the point I was making. I am pretty sure tories are making similar 'extremist' connection wrt khan. Its pathetic because tories have good chance to win election on performance and sound economics alone. why play nasty games.

I would have agreed with you up until a few weeks ago when this Panama leaks unfolded, people are getting sick of elitist Eton educated boys club.

I dont live in London but like many I visit the capital frequently.

To understand the election, you must understand the mayor before Boris Johnson. Ken Livingstone was ( and possibly still is) an alcoholic whose drinking made him incapable of actually doing anything. His recent comments make me think that he is still on the booze. London really needed a release from Livingstone and reasonably elected Johnson. Now Johnson did try his best, and in general I think London is better for it. Politically Johnson is being set up for the next Prime Minister.

Khan has been a capable and reasonable MP. Give him chance to make his mark. His religion is irrelevant. We all need a sensible mayor of London because lots of the UK populace need a well-ordered London, even if we do not live there.

you got to choose between eton educated elite corrupt guy who will save you from being bankrupt or friendly humble labour guy who will spend all your money but when you confront, will say sorry with a cheesy grin..

What is the debt now? £1.6 trillion and counting? interest is over £5000 a second. Was it just labour that made this mess? not dear maggie who de industrialised the country? selling national assets and closing mines in Scotland?

We in a deep mess the only thing in our favour is LONDON the financial capital of the world and where everyone from gulf to china wish to park their money.

But yes given the choice I would rather vote for even green party, UKIP than Corbyn heck I rather just not vote like the majority

Livingstone did quite a bit,, he changed the skyline for London and transport got better with him too.

livingstone was not that bad.... he just picks of bad fights and makes a mess for himself. He could have put the comments in better way but antisemitism allegation is pure bs.

He said some stupid things though, he needs a history lesson but it's just ignorance not anti-Semitism

Why did Indians vote for him? I bet he couldn't have won without their support. Indians are the largest immigrants in London, right?

Because they want progress and collectively they would vote for a South Asian origin candidate. The communities here don't carry the whole Indo v Pak stuff to extreme levels. For example my borough had council elections. The main candidate is Gujarati, yes all the Gujis voted for him but so did all the Pakistanis, as he has forged close ties with the Pakistani community as well and others in the borough. Again it's to do with helping the community.

Yes Indians voted for him, as did Pakistanis, Caribbean people, White folk and so on. You can't win a mandate of 45% off the back of one community.

Dr Gupta

The London skyline was determined by the vast profits of the London banks. Good thing for London I will admit. Got a lot better with Johnson.

As for transport in London, its hard to say. The expansion of London transport is huge, because it has to be, but whether or not this is due to the mayor is debatable. I think that the influence of the mayor is limited to union activity and its effects rather than infrastructure. If Khan can control the unions and not let London transport get into a mire then he has my support.

All in all, Khan has to perform, otherwise its the boot.

I dont think Indian vote mattered much in victory seeing the impressive lead he got. However it is very much likely that he cornered most of minority vote. (black+asian)

It is significant mate. Firstly British Indians are very political and have amongst the highest turnouts for any of the minorities. The community is over half a million people, and that is a big voter pool.
