South Korea is working on cyber weapons capable of targeting North Korea's nuclear facilities.
Inspired by the Stuxnet software which was designed to attack Iranian nuclear enrichment plants, the South Korean defence ministry said it will also resort to similar means.
According to the Yonhap news agency, plans were originally drawn up in 2010 and were presented to the goverment on February 19.
South Korea has been on red alert ever since North Korea tested nuclear weapons in underground controlled explosions which were strong enough to cause an mini-earthquake last year, its third since 2006.
"Once the second phase plan is established, the cybercommand will carry out comprehensive cyberwarfare missions," a senior ministry official said, vowing to target North Korean nuclear plants.
Prof Alan Woodward, a computer security expert at the University of Surrey, told the BBC that such a program could be dangerous and could backfire.
"[The weapon] could end up damaging all sorts of things you never intended it to," he said.
The Stuxnet cyber-attack which targeted Iran's facilities also damaged their Siemens control systems in electrical generation plants, factories and water treatment works, and could even affect infrastructure in South Korea.
