Russia's ruling party wins regional elections

MOSCOW, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's United Russia party won a number of regional and local elections, results showed on Monday.
According to preliminary data from the Central Election Commission (CEC), United Russia won each of the eight regions' legislative polls, taking 183 parliamentary seats in the regional parliaments in total.
The party gained around 62 percent in the southwestern Voronezh region. In the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region in northwest Siberia, it scored 86 percent of the vote.
In the Khabarovsk region in the Far East, the Altai republic in southern Siberia, and the Urals regions of Sverdlovsk, the party got about 48 percent, 44 percent, and 40 percent, respectively.
The other three parties represented in Russia's lower house of parliament - the Communist party, Liberal Democrats and A Just Russia party - also made it into the eight regional parliaments, with Communist winning 35 seats, Liberal Democrats 23 seats, and A Just Russia 21 seats.
CEC Chairman Vladimir Churov said the turnout in the legislative elections was 42.6 percent.
In the battles for local authorities, United Russia suffered a major blow in the Siberian city of Irkutsk, where a Communist candidate garnered 62 percent of the vote in the mayoral elections. However, United Russia candidates secured victory in the elections for mayor in other four cities.
Some 32 million Russians, or one-third of the total voters, took part in Sunday elections for eight of 83 regional parliaments, five city mayors and dozens of town councils. In total, about 6,200 elections of various levels were held.
The CEC said no serious complaints had been filed during Sunday's elections, which have been seen as a test to the popularity of the ruling United Russia party amid growing unemployment and utility prices.
The pro-Kremlin United Russia party swept through last October's elections by polling over half of the ballots in many regions.
