Russian, Indian sailors complete joint exercise in Indian Ocean | Russia Beyond the Headlines
On the final day of the Indra Navy-2015 exercise, Russian and Indian ships performed five planned episodes before both sides proceeded to a summary of the exercise results, followed by a see-off ceremony for the squadron of Russian Pacific Fleet ships in the Bay of Bengal, Eastern Military District (EMD) spokesman 1st Captain Roman Martov told Interfax on Saturday.
"Under the plan of maneuvers, the ships jointly fired artillery against a drifting naval target before conducting a ship-to-ship cargo transfer. Once all these elements were executed, a meeting was held aboard the Indian Navy's INS Sahyadri to summarize the results of the Indra Navy-2015 joint naval exercise-2015," the spokesman said.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Commander of the Pacific Fleet, Vice Admiral Andrei Ryabukhin; the Indian Navy's Eastern Fleet Commander Rear Admiral Sunil Bhokare, officers from the joint command unit, and the commanders of the ships involved in the exercise.
"Summing up the results of the joint maneuvers, Vice Admiral Andrei Ryabukhhin said that the Russian and Indian sailors fulfilled all the tasks with high quality and in full. He also noted that despite the increased difficulty and scale of the tasks during the exercise, mutual understanding and operational compatibility between the two countries' fleets have reached a high level. Vice Admiral Andrei Ryabukhin particularly thanked for the reception and noted that the visit and the exercise were conducted in an atmosphere of total trust and good will," the spokesperson said.
For his part, Rear Admiral Sunil Bhokare said that the Indra Navy 2015 was yet another positive step in the strategic relations between Russia and India. The Indian admiral also said there were no difficulties during the exercise and all issues were solved highly professionally.
The active phase of the Indra Navy-2015 exercise took place in the Indian Ocean on December 10 - 12. During the naval maneuvers the two countries' sailors conducted tactical maneuvering, protecting ships in an unprotected roadsted, and inspected and swapped helicopters. The two sides conducted joint practices in organizing of anti-submarine, air and anti-ship defense, carried out joint artillery strikes against naval and aerial targets, and fired submarine rockets against a mock submarine.
During the exercise, Russia was represented by its guards missile cruiser Varyag, destroyer Bystry, large ocean tanker Boris Butoma, and rescue tug Alatau; India was represented by frigate INS Sahyadri, destroyer INS Ranvir, tanker INS Shakti and diesel-electric submarine INS Sindhuvir, as well as up to ten planes and helicopters.
