Reputation for heavy drinking on the slide since Putin measures including curbs on alcohol sales.
Russia may still have a reputation as a nation of heavy drinkers, but a report by the World Health Organization shows alcohol consumption has dropped by 43% since 2003.

The WHO put the decrease down to a series of measures brought in under the sport-loving president, Vladimir Putin, including restrictions on alcohol sales and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.

“The Russian Federation has long been considered one of the heaviest-drinking countries in the world,” the report, published on Tuesday, says, adding that alcohol was a major contributor to a spike in the number of deaths in the 1990s. “However, in recent years these trends have been reversed,” it says.

The study shows a 43% drop in alcohol consumption per capita from 2003 to 2016, driven by a steep decline in the consumption of bootleg booze.

The authors said this trend was a factor in increased life expectancies in Russia, which reached a historic peak in 2018, at 78 years for women and 68 years for men. In the early 1990s, male life expectancy was just 57 years.

The last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, led an anti-alcohol campaign with partial prohibition, which brought down consumption from the mid-1980s until 1990. But after the collapse of the Soviet Union, alcohol consumption exploded, continuing to rise until the start of the 2000s.

Under Putin, Russia has introduced measures including a ban on shops selling any alcohol after 11pm, increases in the minimum retail price of spirits and an advertising blackout.

Earlier WHO figures showed Russian adults drink less alcohol on average than their French and German counterparts.

Moscow has also launched a drive against smoking, last week announcing a ban on lighting up, even on private balconies.

Tobacco use plummeted by more than a fifth between 2009 and 2016, down to 30% of Russians, according to the most recent Global Adult Tobacco Survey.

The fall of Soviets in 90's and the rise in Alcoholism goes hand in hand

Russian people and their beautiful culture has been abused for 100 years by Media and other news outlets

Living in certain harsh cold climate, the Russian diet is understandable in order to maintain body temperature according to their laws of society

Another factor could be that arrival of capitalism enabled more sales of Product

Although not a contemporary graph, certainly the political stability and endurance of Putin plays a factor in reducing consumption. Certainly a good effort considering how badly alcoholism was weighing on Russian life expectancy; I think the UK has instituted a minimum price per unit policy as well to combat binge drinking (underage drinking in particular).

Now that it is mention , the Rubble collapse was a damaging and painful period for Russian people , but under Great leader Mr Putin , they have been able to turn their country around with hard work

I was quite young but I remember the stuff in news channels in 90's
But I also remember how gradually Russia started a big come back however just as Russia started to become normal again , the world again started to treat Russia in negative light which I feel is the biggest unfortunate thing

Pakistan also remembers the 90's we faced our own sanctions and suspicion back in 90s

A step in the right direction for Russia.

Culture of heavy drinking is not productive for the society at large.

Russia also need to revisit its family values because its population growth is virtually non-existent.

Compared to Yeltsin years its a improvement the demographic were zero growth but the growth has been steadily growing at least 1.5 slightly higher than their Euro counterparts, the Orthodox Church under Putin has been gotten heavy support but I think a lot has to do with Soft Power countries like Russia,China, Pakistan,India, and other countries who may want to break the yoke of un fetthered western cultural influence need to come up with ideas that appeal to youth who may fazed with western lifestyles in general
