Russia claimed victory at the second heat of the 2014 Tank Biathlon world championship, the Russian Defense Ministry’s press service said Wednesday.

“On the current stage [of the competition] Russian Federation came first [with the result of] 26 minutes 27 seconds, the Republic of Kazakhstan came second [with the result of] 30 minutes 14 seconds and the Republic of India was the third [with the result of] 31 minutes 26 seconds,“ said the chief judge of the competition, Lt. Gen. Yury Petrov was quoted by the press service as saying.

The People's Liberation Type 96A main battle tank ranked number eight during the first round of the 2014 World Tank Biathlon individual race, which took place at a landfill in Alabino, near Moscow.

Petrov added that the final results of the individual race would be announced after the third heat on Wednesday.
According to Petrov, the main draw of Wednesday’s race is the competition between the Russian crew led by Sgt. Bulat Tsyrenov competing with the T-72 tank and the Chinese crew with their Type 96A tank.

Tank biathlon is a mechanized military sport invented in Russia. It is designed to be very similar to the regular biathlon. Competing teams need to overcome several obstacles like a slalom section, a ford, a steep hill, a panel bridge and an escarpment and hit targets simulating tanks and low-flying helicopters.

The current competition, which began on August 4, takes place in Alabino just outside Moscow.

Nice to see that we came 3rd, but should have come second.

It seems Kazak forces train harder when it comes to tanks or they understand weaknesses and strengths of T series better than us.

So it should be held in different countries every year, like international sports. So that manufacturers will know the quality of their equipments in different conditions and try to make modifications.

no sir your wrong theterrain near moscow or say 250 miles radius around moscow is hard in summers , marshy in rainy season and very hard in winters while the climate raerli goes beyond 35 degrees centigrate while apart from very high reaches himalaya (north eastern sector) we dont have that terrain most often owr tanks have to sluc owt in dry , very very hot and marchy type (onli in punjab plains) where normal temprature during years expect since oct to jan is amlost beyond 35 degrees celcius which gets close to 50 degrees during peak summer

so the russian climate is hell lot of different than the conditions in indian sub continent

Its a level playing field.

Russia, India, China, Angola, Armenia, Belarus, Venezuela, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Mongolia and Serbia are taking part in this event.

The temp in Moscow on 1st Aug was 33 deg.

Tanks are used in Laddakh as well , the temp there is comparable.

After the ZTZ-96A in the rear throws a track, the Chinese team quickly changes into the replacement tank in the front, to successfully complete the 20km sprint and live fire target practice.

A ZTZ-96A MBT makes the rounds in Alabino, Russia. The Chinese participation in this year's Tank Biathlon is part of a trend in hiigher Chinese military to military exchanges every where from Hawaii to Russia to Africa and the Middle East

Fresh off its victory in the Special Forces "Olympics", the PLA has also signed up for the Russian Tank Biathlon, a competitive sport for main battle tanks. This year, 12 nations are participating in the Second Annual Tank Biathlon; Angola, Armenia, Belarus, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Russia, Serbia and Venezuela. NATO members like the U.S., Germany and Italy were scheduled to attend but recent Ukrainian tensions have put such exchanges into deep freeze. The Biathlon is held at Alabino, a village and military base that also serves as the marshaling ground for Russian Victory Day parades.
