Russia has the largest shale oil reserves, with 75 bln barrels, ahead of the US, China, Argentina and Libya, according to the latest assessment by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).
The EIA, which is the independent statistics arm of the US Department of Energy, also estimates that China has the largest shale gas reserves globally, with over 1,115 tln cubic feet.
The first-ever U.S. assessment of reserves from Russia to Argentina found that global shale resources are vast enough to cover more than a decade of oil consumption, at least, on present estimates.
The US Department of Energy had earlier provided an estimate only for US shale reserves, which increased from 32 bln barrels to 58 bln.
The latest EIA study has found that there are 345 billion barrels of technically recoverable world shale oil resources and 7,299 trillion cubic feet of technically recoverable world shale gas reserves.
