Russia To Supply Yak-130 Jet Trainers To Syria

WARSAW — Russia’s state-owned arms exporter Rosoboronexport will deliver the first batch of nine Yakovlev Yak-130 jet trainers to the Syrian government by the end of this year. The contract for 36 aircraft is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2016, a source close to the deal told local business daily Kommersant.

Under the plan, Rosoboronexport will deliver 12 aircraft in 2015, and a further 15 jet trainers in 2016.

“Thus, we will fulfill the obligations under a previously signed contract,” the source was quoted as saying.

Last year, Damascus transferred an advance payment of about US $100 million to Russia following the signing of the deal. The jet trainers will be manufactured by Irkutsk aviation plant, a subsidiary of Russian defense giant Rostec.

In 2014, Rosoboronexport inked a contract with Bangladesh’s Ministry of Defense for the delivery of 24 Yak-130s. The deal was es-timated to be worth $800 million with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2015.

The two-seat subsonic jet trainer was designed by Russian aircraft design and manufacturing company Yakovlev in cooperation with Ita-ly’s Alenia Aermacchi. The aircraft has a maximum speed of 1050 kilometers per hour and a range of 2,000 kilometers, according to figures from Yakovlev.
