The Varshavyanka class submarine Stary Oskol - built for Russia's Black Sea Fleet - was launched at the Admiralty Wharves Shipyard in Saint Petersburg, Thursday. Designed by the Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering, this modern Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine is armed with torpedoes, mines and cruise missiles.

The third-generation Varshavyanka submarines are famous for being almost undetectable when they are submerged. That is why the US Navy calls them "the black holes in the ocean."

Stary Oskol reaches speeds of 20 knots and is able to dive to 300 metres. Its crew consists of 52 people. A total of six Varshavyanka class submarines will be built for the Black Sea Fleet.

Stealth subs have an anti sonar coating which isn't new. It was first conceived by the Third Reich designers way back in the 40s!

However, the technology has improved considerably. The new material will feature embedded active sensors neutralizing sonar search signals of enemy ships/subs. The new construction will reduce the so-called sonar visibility by at least three times. This technology is truly cutting edge.

How does it work? Active coating with embedded electronics will determine the frequency at which the radar of the opponent operates and launch its own signal of the same frequency but in opposite phase. The development will be universal for all Russian submarines and will have to work with advanced computer systems for the submarine fleet.

Great stuff. All we have to do now is to borrow this tech from the Russians for our own new sub fleet! Of course, we'll help fund further improvements so they transfer technology to us, as is the norm!! :-)
