MOSCOW, Aug 5 (Reuters) - The Taliban offensive in Afghanistan is "gradually running out of steam" as the group lacks resources to take over major cities, Interfax news agency quoted a senior official at Russia's foreign ministry as saying on Thursday.

Alexander Vikantov, deputy head of information and press at the ministry, cited examples where Afghan government forces were able to retake some districts captured by the Taliban last month, although he added that insurgent activity was notable this month near big provincial centres.

"The Taliban lack the resources to take over and hold major cities including the capital, Kabul. Their offensive is gradually running out of steam," he said.

Russia would continue to press for peace talks, he added.

The Taliban's rapid territorial gains in Afghanistan's rural areas over the last few months caught many off guard, particularly the Afghan government.

While the pace of that blitz has slowed, insurgent fighters have turned their attention to urban centres, penetrating deep into three key provincial capitals, which many fear could fall into Taliban control.

Fighting has been particularly heavy inside the city of Herat, near the western border with Iran, Lashkar Gah, capital of Helmand province in the southwest, and Kandahar in the south.

Three Taliban commanders told Reuters they had switched strategy from targeting rural areas to attacking provincial cities, in response to increased U.S. air strikes after the United States said it was ending its longest war

An Afghan military spokesman said this week an emergency had been declared in Lashkar Gah and government forces were getting reinforcements and U.S. air support. "Special forces have been sent to the area. They are in good morale," armed forces spokesman General Ajmal Omar Shinwari told Reuters.

The loss of Lashkar Gah would be a huge blow for the government, which has pledged to defend strategic centres after losing many rural districts to the Taliban in recent months.

it has slowed due consolidation of forces. they have taken over the rural areas and are now turning their focus on provincial capitals. they took control of kunduz and another capital fell to them today so...this news is dead on arrival.

.
Lol this was 5 days ago and this article is a repost plus this has proven to be entirely wrong and intellectually bankrupt.. As 6 capitals has fallen since this statement was made which means in the last 5 days 6 cities has fallen infact I would say during this weekend all 6 fell

Pakistan was right about Taliban and Afghanistan all along. Taliban would easily take over complete Afghanistan, it is matter of only when. Only variable would be if there are hidden Tajik agents of USA radioing in GPS coordinates for bombing.

Unlike normal Afghan forces, these hidden agents radioing in GPS coordinates are difficult to detect and fight.

in general taking a modern city is hard especially if the other side is continouly being armed.

I dont see the taliban taking down the major cities with our air suppport from PAF like in the 1990s.

taliban strategy seems one of encirclement and hammering the ANA in to submission.

Exactly.
If they didn't run out of steam in the past 20 years when US and NATO. Why would they now run out of steam infront of a corrupt and incompetent ANA.

Really PAF was active inside afghanistan to support Taliban during 90,s?

And that's they most powerful thing. All the food resources to cities comes from rural areas, they block the supply to cities and surround them from rural areas. Ultimately they have to surrender.

not really. Taliban's internal intelligence & counter intelligence is insanely strong, to the extent that the u.s. & nato forces couldn't even track down mullah Omar who was literally living across the street from bagram air base. tajik or no tajik, usa agents can't hide from their internal counter intelligence and aren't spared. on top of that, Pakistan probably let's them know that the air strikes are on their way so the Taliban fighters would disperse only to regroup again۔ I can almos guarantee you that those "200 dead" were mostly civilian villagers.

Yes, but how would Taliban detect these agents, they just mix with civilians in plain clothes. And they report in using a satellite phone, maybe disguised as cattle herder on a mountain.

And b52 bombers are flying in from Qatar US airbase, not Pakistan air base, so Pakistan can't detect them so easily. And this US troop pullout could be a feint, to draw out Taliban.

leave it to them، they know how to track em down.

they still have to cross Pakistani airspace. there's this thing called a radar and control towers. ;) and that's a pretty dumb way to draw the Taliban out given that they were all there in front of their faces to begin with.

And you believe this?

Afghan Government has been claiming for two decades non-stop that they've killed hundreds of Taliban fighters nearly every other day, yet there are still 75,000 Taliban fighters today.

If we consider the demographics, 2/3rd Pasthun population lives in Pakistan. So, Afghan Government situation was weak anyway, but never thought they would buckle so easily without a fight. Weren't Mughals Uzbeks and Tajiks and other Central Asians? who ruled over south Asia. How come these Tajiks and Uzbeks are so pathetic weak now ?

Throughout history people of the barren deserts and mountains used to invade and dominate people living in plains and valleys. Now, in modern era things seems to have reversed, now those who hold more fertile lands seems to be growing stronger and stronger.
