Russia's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has ordered 150 Yakovlev Yak-152 trainer planes, according to Sergei Yamanov, production director at the Aircraft-Manufacturing Plant in Irkutsk, East Siberia.
"The Aircraft-Manufacturing Plant in Irkutsk has started fulfilling the Russian defence ministry's order. The defence ministry has ordered 150 Yak-152 trainers," Yamanov said.
According to the director, three Yak-152 trainer planes are currently at various assembly stages at the Irkutsk plant.
The Yakovlev Design Bureau won a RUB300 million (USD4.6 million) tender in 2014 to develop a trainer aircraft for the MoD. The programme has been designated as Ptichka-VVS. The new trainer is planned to be made operational no later than November 2016.
According to Yamanov, the Yak-152 trainer will perform its first flight before the end of 2016.
Serial production is then expected to start in 2017 at the Irkutsk plant, which is a subsidiary of Russia's Irkut Corporation.
The Yak-152 trainer is expected to replace the old Yak-52 trainer, of which Russia has 339. The new trainer can be equipped with a diesel engine using aviation kerosene, which should reduce operational costs.
