Russia Launches European Telecommunication Satellite

Russia's Proton-M delivery vehicle lifted off early on Monday from the Baikonur Space Center in Kazakhstan, carrying a European telecommunications satellite Ka-Sat on board.

"The launch was carried out at a scheduled time [21:51 GMT] from the Baikonur space center. The separation of the European satellite from the Briz-M booster is expected in nine hours and 12 minutes," a spokesman for the Russian Federal Space Agency Roscosmos said.

Ka-Sat was made by EADS Astrium for Eutelsat, a leading provider of satellite telecommunications services in Europe.

The six-ton satellite is a new generation of high throughput satellites operating in Ka-band frequencies and with total throughout of 70 Gigabits per second.

Through a configuration of 82 spotbeams and a ground infrastructure of ten gateways connected to the Internet, the satellite will provide service to customers across Europe and the Mediterranean.

Meanwhile, this was the first launch of Proton-M after a previous rocket veered off course shortly after the launch and sunk in the Pacific Ocean on December 5, losing three Glonass-M satellites.

An investigation commission blamed the failed launch on Russia's Energia space company, which miscalculated the amount of fuel for a DM-3 booster.

The Proton-M launched on Monday is equipped with a Briz-M booster made by the Khrunichev Center.
