Vitaly V. Kuzmin / WikicommonsRussia has signed a contract to give Belarus four S-300 air defense systems.
The Russian Defense Ministry has signed a contract to give Belarus four S-300 air defense systems, which are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, free of charge, a top Russian military official told ITAR-Tass on Thursday.

The S-300 is one of the world's most sought after air defense systems. Its radar can hone in on aircraft, cruise missiles and even ballistic missiles, and destroy targets as far away as 150 kilometers, launching one missile every three seconds.

The S-300s will be handed over as soon as the Belarussian Defense Ministry signs the contact, said Konstantin Biryulin, deputy director of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu first told reporters about the planned deal in October 2013, saying that both sides were looking to beef up their joint air defense system, which was created as part of a 2009 agreement between Moscow and Minsk.

Minsk is not stopping at the S-300s, however, having recently agreed to buy four Yak-130 combat training aircraft from Moscow, and an unspecified number of Tor-M2 air defense systems, Biryulin said.

Iran has been trying to buy S-300s from Russia for years, but to no avail.

An $800-million-purchase of five S-300s by Iran was halted in 2010 by then-President Dmitry Medvedev, who was worried that the deal would tarnish Russia's image at a time when the United Nations was imposing sanctions on Tehran to pressure it into abandoning its nuclear ambitions.

Georgia/Syria/Ukraine-Crimea did it not tarnish russian image in the world? as far I know some sort of deal was reached with US to not supply S-300 to iran and russians would get some incentives or waver from IMF/WB and other organizations what happened russians did not sell S-300 or bag money from iran and also got back stabbed by west/US in form of more sanctions. If russians want to show a posture they should sell S-300 or some other system to iran to show it can exercise its power on the global scale..what does it matter anyway the visa/master card is now banned in russia the truth is they losing side is russia at the moment but they need to rise.

@senheiser

good news. belarus is one of two trusted friends of russia in the cis territory, the other being kazakstan. is there some other??

russia should station some s-300 in crimea, and supply more s-300 to syria, along with the pantsir close-range weapon system. and also to north korea, venezuela, egypt, algeria, cuba and pakistan too. all these nations can soon except nato invasions.

of course, i shouldn't be talking about wars but...

Agree. Russia have had a bad habbit of falling into Western traps, while the U.S. and its allies have continued to systematically attack Russian allies since 1990s, but also Iraq (2003) , Libya (2011) and the proxy-war against Syria (from 2011) in addition to the coup i Kiev/Ukraine earlier this year.

.

Armenia and other countries in Central Asia. Also China and India are very good partners/friends of Russia.

S-300 will most probably be deployed on Crimea as Yakhont anti-ship missiles are going to be there too. So they need air protection.

Venezuela har already S-300VM version. Algeria har S-300 PMU2 version.

North Korea said they have built their own version, but I don't know how true that is. Egypt and Pakistan are not yet stable to receive those kind of systems unfortunately, that can fall into hands of the groups that could use those kind of missiles to shoot down civilian aircraft.

Cuba is too small to have systems like that. Although Bangladesh or Sri Lanka or Angola in addition to maybe South Africa could be good or possible customers.

What for? Russia and Belorussia have a common system of air defense.

I was think that Russians and Belarusians can help on the other countries to build air defence systems ,same like they do in Iran.
Franchising for S-300 can bring a lot of money.

I have heard that Belarus is the only country who did not want to leave USSR but kicked out
