A Russian court has fined U.S. tech giant Apple a total of 7.5 million rubles (approximately $93,500) for violating Russia’s strict “LGBT propaganda” laws, according to official statements from the Moscow courts’ press office. The fines were imposed for three separate administrative offenses related to the promotion of what Moscow terms “non-traditional sexual relations,” a category broadly used to target LGBTQ+ content and activism under Russia’s expanded anti-LGBTQ+ legislation enacted in 2023.

The Tagansky District Court in Moscow found Apple Distribution International Ltd. guilty of these violations and ordered three fines of 2.5 million rubles each. The hearings were held behind closed doors at Apple’s request, citing concerns over the disclosure of confidential company information, so the exact nature of each offense remains undisclosed, this secrecy has fueled speculation but confirms the Kremlin’s ongoing crackdown on LGBTQ+ rights and expression within Russia.

There are serious legal ramifications for people and groups involved in LGBTQ+ activism as a result of Russia's government designating the global LGBTQ+ movement as extreme and calling its adherents terrorists. Numerous penalties and criminal charges have been brought against media outlets, internet platforms and now large multinational firms like Apple as a result of this legal framework, Apple's sanctions come after comparable penalties were previously levied against executives and online movie distributors.

With President Vladimir Putin portraying the measures as a defense against what he calls moral decay imported from Western nations, the crackdown on LGBTQ+ rights in Russia has gotten worse since the law expansion in 2023, the legislation essentially criminalizes any positive representation or promotion of LGBTQ+ identities, severely restricting the community freedom of expression and assembly.

In recent years Apple has complied further with Russian censorship demands, including removing apps and content that Russian authorities have considered undesirable, in spite of criticism from human rights groups, the corporation has been under increasing pressure to comply with local rules in order to continue operating in the nation, the fines show how difficult it is for multinational corporations to maintain international human rights norms while operating in restrictive regimes, and they mark a major increase in the legal issues Apple faces in Russia.

Regarding the fines and the court procedures, Apple has not made a public statement, in order to prevent public examination of the cases, the company legal team requested closed hearings, this method aligns with Apple's overarching goal of discreetly handling delicate legal issues, particularly in countries with strict censorship and monitoring laws.

The penalties imposed on Apple coincide with a larger trend of growing persecution of LGBTQ+ people and their sympathizers in Russia. Numerous arrests, detentions, and prosecutions for alleged violations of the propaganda law have occurred and reports suggest that authorities are building databases to follow LGBTQ+ persons, under the guise of these regulations, public gatherings have been cancelled and cultural and educational materials that support diversity have been restricted or outright prohibited.
