Unified Air Defense Systems Priority for CIS Collective Security
Russian has considered signing an agreement with Armenia to establish a unified air-defense system in the Caucasus.
“Accept the proposal by the government of the Russian Federation on signing an agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia on creating a Joint Regional System of Anti-Air Defense in the Caucasus region of collective security,” the document reads in which the nation's president Putin instructed the Russian Defense Ministry to sign the agreement with Armenia on behalf of the Russian Federation.
The creation of joint missile defense systems in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia regions is a key objective for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the Council of CIS Defense Ministers was quoted as saying by Sputnik International today.
The CIS consists of 12 states. They are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
In September month Lt.-Gen. Pavel Kurachenko had said “A draft agreement with Armenia on establishing a unified air defense system in the Caucasus collective security region and Russia has already been approved and is ready for signing,”
The Caucasus is a region at the border of Europe and Asia, situated between the Black and the Caspian seas.
