Probably some kind of a joke by WJP.. There is no law in SL atleast to the common people.. If SL is the best ranked in South Asia cant imagine how bad it is for the rest of it

World Justice Project’s Rule of Law Index 2014: Sri Lanka top in South Asia | DailyFT - Be Empowered

Sri Lanka ranks first among South Asian countries in the latest Rule of Law Index compiled by the World Justice Project’s (WJP) research team.

“Sri Lanka ranks 48th globally and outperforms its regional peers in most dimensions of the rule of law,” the Index said.

The country also outpaces most lower-middle income countries in several areas, ranking second in delivering effective criminal justice. Control of corruption is relatively effective (ranking 39th globally and first in the region) and rights violations related to the legacy of a protracted civil conflict remains problematic, it added. The Index observed that order and security is improving worldwide while criminal justice is declining.Out of the eight factors that are reported on in the Index, four improved on average and four deteriorated. The factors that improved were “absence of corruption,” “open government,” “order and security”, and “regulatory enforcement.” Those that deteriorated were “constraints on government powers”, “fundamental rights”, “civil justice”, and “criminal justice”.

The WJP is an independent, multi-disciplinary organisation working to advance the rule of law around the world. Its Index is the world’s most comprehensive data set of its kind.
The World Justice Project’s Rule of Law Index looks at 47 outcomes (or sub-factors) organised around nine dimensions (or factors): constraints on government powers; absence of corruption; open government; fundamental rights; order and security; regulatory enforcement; civil justice; criminal justice; and informal justice.

The World Justice Project has the support of outstanding leaders representing a range of disciplines around the world. Former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, former US President Jimmy Carter, former Ireland President Mary Robinson and South African social rights activist Bishop Desmond Tutu are among the Honorary Chairs of the World Justice Project.

WJP Rule of Law Index® 2014

India has 0.48 and stands on the 3rd place in the region.

Seriously mate.. Bar Bangladesh all of South Asia has been independent for over 60 years.. How pathetic.. Sometimes you tend to think they would have been better off under the British

well done Srilanka...

SL used to be a fine example not any more.. Ground reality is very different.. Law and order in the country seems to be going down the drain every other day.. The police and the judiciary is completely politicized..The ruling regime has impunity from the law

Or what's happening in the rest of the region is just beyond comprehension

.
good for sri lanka. but not much of an achievement considering the comparisons though. that's like some warsaw pact country being declared the most sober nation in eastern europe

.
seriously? This makes me wonder how the rest of South Asia is!!

.
Sri Lanka is lot better than what most SLns think compared to its neighbors

. . .
May be! but we are certianly not where we should be..........

Good governance and the rule of law is not a western concept it's a universal one.. Like somebody mentioned being better off from the worst lot should not be something to cheer about.. Especially knowing the ground situation is far wore then the report might suggest

.
What should be SL s rank then ?
Not a particular rank. But i dont want my country to be a country where,

1. a police man was assaulted, his car burnt for the simple reason he issued a speeding ticket to a minister and all the gover protecting that minister.
2. I dont want a president meddling in our judiciary and create anti democratic executive
3. I dont want to see a gov minister go and make a teacher knelt down cos she punished his daughter and no action against him.
4. A key witness to that was killed
5. Read about athakota and the protection given to him by Mahipala
6. I dont want to see the abuse of SL resources by gover policticians
7. I dont want to see land grabbing of poor people by politicians under the guise of development
8. I want action on the corruption cases in COPE and not protection for wrong doers
9. I want PS members accused of rape to be punished
10. I dont want to allow the gover and its members to abuse law and do any wrong and get out of puinishment using powers

11. In simple i want MR and his gover to stop protecting 'ape miniha' from every wrong he does

Being a small country with small population and blessed with natural resources and good weather, I woul be surprised if SL didn't do well.

But they have legendary third world politicians and majority of third world nincompoops that vote those politicians in to nullify what ever advantages you have mentioned, That is sadly the truth

Now why i am not surprised,Looks like SL is gonna be the 1st developed country of South Asia,Glad to see someone is making it happen.Rest of South Asia should be nuked
