Tragic accident
Muscat: Investigation is underway to determine the circumstances and direct causes that led to the accident and identify the offending party, Royal Oman Police said in a statement.
The statement was issued in connection to the crash that took place on the Qurum/Darsait flyover that claimed the lives of three students of Pakistan School Muscat on Wednesday. The accident occurred when the school bus crashed into a parked garbage collection truck which resulted in injuries of many children between the age of 7 and 17 years.
The statement also added, "Overcrowding of students inside the bus resulted in severe injuries".
"The number of students inside the bus was 38 while the bus was designed to transport only 25 passengers. This is a violation of traffic law and its implementing regulations," it added.
It also added that the results of the preliminary investigation indicates that the bus was coming from the direction of Al Qurum towards Muttrah and when it reached the accident site it collided with the rear of a truck which was parked on the right shoulder of the road, leading to the titling of the bus on the right side of the road."
"In the same vein, technical preview of the scene and the positions of damages caused to the bus and the truck was performed and measurements of the accident were taken to verify the facts of the incident," the police statement added.
ROP has called upon motorists to pay attention and maintain caution while on the road, abide by traffic laws and rules and make sure not to exceed the speed limit at all times.
