This undated file photo shows famed physicist Albert Einstein. Scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, the world's largest physics lab, say they have clocked subatomic particles, called neutrinos, traveling faster than light, a feat that, if true, would break a fundamental pillar of science, the idea that nothing is supposed to move faster than light, at least according to Einstein's special theory of relativity: The famous E (equals) mc2 equation. That stands for energy equals mass times the speed of light squared. The readings have so astounded researchers that they are asking others to independently verify the measurements before claiming an actual discovery. (AP Photo)
One of the very pillars of physics and Einstein's theory of relativity - that nothing can go faster than the speed of light - was rocked Thursday by new findings from one of the world's foremost laboratories.

European researchers said they clocked an oddball type of subatomic particle called a neutrino going faster than the 186,282 miles per second that has long been considered the cosmic speed limit.
The claim was met with skepticism, with one outside physicist calling it the equivalent of saying you have a flying carpet. In fact, the researchers themselves are not ready to proclaim a discovery and are asking other physicists to independently try to verify their findings.
"The feeling that most people have is this can't be right, this can't be real," said James Gillies, a spokesman for the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, which provided the particle accelerator that sent neutrinos on their breakneck 454-mile trip underground from Geneva to Italy.
Going faster than light is something that is just not supposed to happen according to Einstein's 1905 special theory of relativity - the one made famous by the equation E equals mc2. But no one is rushing out to rewrite the science books just yet.
It is "a revolutionary discovery if confirmed," said Indiana University theoretical physicist Alan Kostelecky, who has worked on this concept for a quarter of a century.
Stephen Parke, who is head theoretician at the Fermilab near Chicago and was not part of the research, said: "It's a shock. It's going to cause us problems, no doubt about that - if it's true."
Even if these results are confirmed, they won't change at all the way we live or the way the world works. After all, these particles have presumably been speed demons for billions of years. But the finding will fundamentally alter our understanding of how the universe operates, physicists said.
Einstein's special relativity theory, which says that energy equals mass times the speed of light squared, underlies "pretty much everything in modern physics," said John Ellis, a theoretical physicist at CERN who was not involved in the experiment. "It has worked perfectly up until now."
France's National Institute for Nuclear and Particle Physics Research collaborated with Italy's Gran Sasso National Laboratory on the experiment at CERN.

Roll over Einstein: Law of physics challenged (Update 3)

If thats true than in coming years may be that will be used as means of propulsion. Although there is also an other way to move with 1/2 or may be more than that with the speed of light using collision of matter and anti-matter but its very very expensive to produce it just few grams cost more than 250 million dollars (antimatter is the most powerful element discovered- with just 1 kilo of antimatter u can decimate a whole city ) but there will be many many complications to move with speed of light if used as propulsion

.

Gotta luv it - as Earth shattering an event as Einstein's challenge to Newtonian physics - and just one response on all of Defense .pk - maybe if hadith were discovered to travel faster than truth, it might interest Pakistanis - anyways, it 's just laws of physics, not divine law

What earth shattering event?

Even the authors themselves admit that they are not sure of their results and have asked for further corroboration. I would hold the celebratory fireworks until that is forthcoming.

Science is always changing, even some of the most fundamental principles will be broken every once in a while.

One of the things I love about Science, it is always adapting.

(Though considering this specific piece of news, we should probably wait until the results are replicated/confirmed elsewhere first.)

Pretty sure I heard about the neutrinos doing time travel before - so this is a feather in Einstein's cap. He did say that if anything travelled faster than light it would travel time.

Interesting -- Adapting, can you expand on that?

Time Travel, at two different places at the same timem at the beginning and the end?

Well the Scientific method uses empirical evidence to come up with objective conclusions.

So if the evidence changes, the conclusion changes as well. The conclusions will adapt to the evidence.

Time Travel, at two different places at the same timem at the beginning and the end?

Time is relative, and affected by things such as speed and gravity.

As you approach the speed of light, it creates an effect called Time dilation, which basically means that in "relative" terms, time has slowed down.

And according to Einstein's special relativity, faster than light travel could cause an effect that is similar to time travel. Though there are many theories.

Other day, another pakistani broke the OHMS law. now this.

Looks like pakistani are good at breaking already established laws. BTW great work.

Let me see if I understand this correctly - basically, if corroborated, this particle is ever "present" in all relative time?

Long ago before his death, Tesla is reported to have claimed he could make particles travel at speeds higher than that of light - even twice as fast. He died soon after, claims the reporter who says he interviewed Tesla on that. And Tesla was no common physicist.

'Ghost particle' acting like ghost. :)

It will change the base of physics if true. The modern physics is based on this concept that light (photon) is the fastest possible particle in the world. It may even prompt to change the famous E=Mc2 as well.

India is building a neutrino observatory which is called 'India based Neutrino Observatory' (INO). Hope it will reveal some more truth.

The underground lab will be 2.2 km inside peak of the hill and at 1.3 km depth.
