Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO) blamed for last week's terror attack in Myanmar's Rakhine state allegedly received training and support from Bangladesh's outlawed and pro-ISI Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) which penetrated RSO through Rohingya refugee settlements in the Chittagong area of Bangladesh.

The first such terror strike in Myanmar and counter-terror measures were a key item on the agenda of dialogue when Myanmar’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi met Narendra Modi here on Wednesday.

A statement issued by the Myanmar President’s Office on October 13 said the attacks were carried out by Aqa Mul Mujahidin, which is linked to the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation.

The leader of the group was identified as Havistoohar, an extremist who attended a “six-month Taliban training course in Pakistan”. Nine Myanmarese policemen were killed and 64 weapons looted during the attacks.

JeI which has encouraged several terror strikes in Bangladesh over the years had allegedly penetrated RSO ranks in Chittagong, according to persons familiar with the history of RSO.

Experts do not rule out possibility of JeI being conduit for RSO-Pak linkages. Chittagong has been stronghold of JeI and its student’s wing for decades.

RSO came into existence around 1980 to help Rohinhyans achieve citizenship and procure their rights as Burmese citizens.

The RSO became the main armed faction among the Rohingyas in Bangladesh and on the border. Given its more rigid religious stand, the RSO soon secured the support of like-minded groups -- JeI in Bangladesh and Pakistan, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's Hizb-e-Islami in Afghanistan and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) in Jammu and Kashmir.

Modi and Suu Kyi held threadbare discussions on terrorism in South Asia and counter-measures during her maiden state-visit to India. Suu Kyi had echoed India’s sentiments on terrorism in South Asia during her statement at BRICS-BIMSTEC outreach at Goa last Sunday.

“Both sides condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations as well as all acts, methods and practices of terrorism wherever, by whomever, against whomsoever committed and agreed that the fight against terrorism should target terrorists, hold to account terror organisations, networks and also states that encourage, support or finance terrorism in any way. Both sides also agreed that terrorism is first and foremost a violation of human rights and that there can be no justification for extending support, financing, provision of material resources or training to terrorists who destroy innocent lives. Both countries called for the expeditious finalization of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism presently being negotiated in the United Nations,” noted a joint statement issued after Modi-Suu Kyi talks.

Both India and Myanmar also shared the view that maintaining security along the border is essential for the socio-economic development of the border area.

“In this regard, both sides underlined their mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and reaffirmed their shared commitment to fight insurgent activity and the scourge of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Both sides expressed the view that the long-standing commitment not to allow insurgent groups to use their soil for hostile activities against the other side is essential for the prosperity of the people residing along the border. In this context, it was agreed that the border guarding forces on both sides would further coordinate and exchange information towards securing the common borders. Both sides also agreed to expedite discussions regarding the relevant border segments,” announced the joint statement.

Why does Pakistan allow non state actors to interfere in other nationals affairs. What has Pakistan done for its own minorities that it pokes its nose in rohingya issues.

Rohingya people have been the victims of the worst possible crimes against humanity at the hands of ugly and racist regime of Myanmar so any act by them against the terrorist regmine it is totally justified

And now they're being killed on mass. Good job.

I think this is biased as Pakistan have very good relationship with Myanmar Military.

The JeI barely have enough money to run their organization here. How will they run a terror army overseas? War takes money regardless of one's view. It is a fact.

As they say, news doesn't sell in a country where Pakistan isn't mentioned even if Pakistan is a complete non-issue with the topic at hand. The examples are plenty.

22 rohingya muslims were killed in a village who tried to defend themselves with knives and were labelled terrorists.

Why the newspaper should write terror strikes when the Rohingyas are defending themselves from the govt. troops and when they themselves are dying in hundreds by bullets. It is a double standard.

nothing wrong in raising voice for oppressed rohingya, even international human rights organizations are also worried about their situation..

But how Jamat e Islami BD is pro Pakistan? This mean whoever support oppressed Rohangiya is Pro Pakistan in bharti dictionary? If we speak against unjust trails involving Pakistan does not mean Pakistan have anything to do with Jamat e Islami BD.. they are loyal to BD unlike Rawami league..
