Rods from God

has anyone heard of this?

its a new space project by DARPA boys. very long rods dropped from a satellite in space... the gravitational acceleration would be so much that not even nuclear bunkers will be able to withstand them.

watch in horror as mile long rods drop from the sky and demolish everything.

what is worse is that they only need to be released from low-orbit and they will fall. they don't need a rocket to propel them....

the only problem is air re-entry heating and winds at higher altitudes... if they can be overcome by the same methods as on NASA space vehicles... Rods from God can become a viable weapon

As long as the rods dont explode they will not cause any damage execp some earth boring deep enough to extract water. Something here does not fit with laws of physics.

nopes.. the sheer velocity of the rods will destroy everything... its the same principle as a bullet.. small size.. extreme velocity can penetrate and damage everything...

So at least if nothing else, we now have Green Weapons!!!!!

You don't need explosives to produce a big boom. How do you think asteroids and meteors pack such a punch?

Sufficient mass propelled to extremely high speed will cause extremely high amount of damage. The more the mass and more the speed, the more energy the body will have and bigger the boom. This is exactly how Railguns work.

The only problem with propelling heavy objects to high speed is the need for extremely high amount of energy. But if the object is launched from vacuum of space it will require much less energy to be pushed to high speed, plus earths gravity will help it along as well.

One problem here is that getting these objects or rods into space or low orbit would be expensive.
