A daily wager in Madhya Pradesh's Shivpuri, Shiva Kewat, is a troubled man. He has been so for three years and this is not because of his financial or living conditions. His troubles are thanks to a bunch of crows that have identified him as their sworn enemy.

Every time Kewat steps out of his house in Shivpuri's Sumela village, he carries a stick along, to protect himself from the crow attack that waits right outside his door, reported the Times of India.

It all started three years ago when Kewat found a crow chick stuck in a net and rushed to rescue it. The baby crow died in his hands and there was not much he could to do revive it.

"It died in my hands. If only I could explain it to them, I was only trying to help," a hapless Kewat told TOI while looking up at the skies and bracing for the fleet of swooping crows.

Ever since the death of the chick three years ago, the crow families in the neighbourhood have identified Kewat and they seem to be in no mood to forgive him although he says it was not his fault.

Even after all these years, every time he steps out of the house, the crows come swooping down to poke and bite him all over his body and head. The daily ordeal has become a source of entertainment for his neighbours and there is not much that can be done.

Kewat has several injury marks on his hands and head. He says initially he didn't take the attacks seriously. But soon he realised that the revengeful crows were not attacking anyone else and had identified him as their enemy to target him every day.

He is still surprised at the face recognition power of these crows, which is a new discovery for him.

The man now hopes that the crows forgive him after all these years.

Crow Brains Reveal Secrets of Their Intelligence

Crows are well known for their intelligence. In fact, the entire Corvidae family is renowned for being the smartest of all birds and some of the smartest of all animals. The secret to their superior intellect has been located in their brain for the first time, according to a new study from Lena Veit and Andreas Nieder from the Institute of Neurobiology at the University of Tübingen. The paper was published in Nature Communications.

Corvids like crows and ravens have been known for their intelligence long before much research was given to the subject. In addition to being one of the few animals capable of using tools to find food and solve problems, they have complex social structures. Information is shared within the murder so that group decisions can be made. They have incredible memories which allow them to recognize human faces. This is bad news for the people that aren’t well liked by the birds, because word can spread and the crows will dive and attack faces.

Unfortunately, because bird brains are so different from mammalian brains, not a lot has been known about how decisions are made and where avian intelligence actually comes from. For the study, the crows were trained to perform a series computerized memory tests. An image would flash on the screen and then disappear. Next, two more images would appear. One was the same as the first while the other was different. Some portions of the test required the crows to find a match with the first image and other sections wanted the image that was different. After a brief training period the crows were able to do the test effortlessly, even when unfamiliar images were used.

While the crows were busy selecting images, researchers were mapping the birds’ neurological function. They discovered that there was a great deal of activity in the nidopallium caudolaterale, which is somewhat analogous to the human prefrontal cortex. This is the region of the brain where higher-thinking occurs and executive decisions are made. The researchers also noticed activity in different areas based on if the crow was supposed to pick the item that was the same while a different area was used when the selected image was supposed to be different. After a while, the researchers could use the bird’s brain activity and see what it was going to select before the bird had a chance to submit its choice.

Because bird brains are so different from mammalian brains, there aren’t a lot of shared structures from before the divergence over 300 million years ago. Even though the structure isn’t the same, there are a lot of similarities in the decision-making cells. The researchers speculate that the intelligence seen in mammals (primates, specifically) and that found in birds could very well be a product of convergent evolution.

Crows are nasty. I once tried to pick up a crow baby that had fallen because it was trying to fly. A gang of about a hundred gathered and i had to run indoors. For about a week they would chase me whenever they saw me, thank God that baby was not dead.

A friend of mine in Lahore became the victim of a crow and the assault continued for week.
He tried to scare a crow one day that was sitting on his motorbike. After that every single day that crow would sit on his bike and wait for him to step out. And when he did, crow would take a dump and fly away. He had to change the place where he used to park his bike.

A crow once took the only 4 day old chick of my hen, and I made their life hell..

I was in grade 7, I bought an air gun and everyday I used to fire at their nest on my Mango tree.. a lot of crows would gather after watching me taking the aim of that nest (where I saw the dead body of the poor little chick). Once they all gathered, I would start shooting at the gathering.. I killed a couple, injured several crows over the period of couple of months..

The matter was so serious that the nest was destroyed in a week's time with all the crow eggs having holes in them, and crows started hating me first.. then fearing my presence.. literally..

Whenever I would come back, crows knew I will take the aim anytime now and a crow will get injured..

After a couple of months, I came back to my senses and crows started ignoring me..

This guy needs an air gun too.. and he needs to start killing them.. everyday, mercilessly.. do it for many many many days.. until crows come back to their senses.. if they don't.. just continue with the firing..

A couple of months later, the day he will skip the firing, crows will just thank God that he has skipped..

They are smart, we feed birds in our backyard.. sometimes when there is no bird seeds, we give bread, but when bread stays there for a while it hardens, so what they do is dip the bread in a small pot of water (we give water as well, since its essential for all living things), other times they get dried bread from our neighbours and dip it in the pot of water in our garden.
