Germany eyes Lockheed F-35 fighter jet; no final decision -source

BERLIN/WASHINGTON, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Germany is leaning toward purchasing the U.S. fighter jet F-35 built by Lockheed Martin (LMT.N) to replace its ageing Tornado in the role of nuclear sharing, a German defence source told Reuters on Thursday, but a final decision has not been taken.

Another source, close to the German military, said a possible F-35 purchase was "back on the table", but no decisions were expected anytime soon.

"There have been recent efforts to inform Germany of how to move ahead with a potential F-35 purchase," a third source involved in the effort told Reuters.

A government spokesperson in Berlin was not immediately available for comment.

"As a matter of policy, we will not publicly confirm or comment on proposed defense transfers or sales until they have been formally notified to Congress. We refer you to the German government to speak to its future defense procurement plans," a spokesperson for the State Department in Washington said.

Germany needs to replace its ageing Tornado jets swiftly to remain part of NATO's nuclear sharing agreement, something the new government under Chancellor Olaf Scholz has pledged to do.

The Tornado is the only German jet capable of carrying U.S. nuclear bombs, stored in Germany, in case of a conflict. But the air force has been flying the jet since the 1980s, and Berlin is planning to phase it out between 2025 and 2030.

Germany's new coalition said it will purchase a replacement early in its four-year term in office. Without this move, Berlin would drop out of nuclear sharing when the last Tornado retires around 2030. read more

The German defence source said Scholz was expected to raise the issue during a trip to Washington next week.

Should Germany decide to buy the F-35, it would be a blow for Boeing (BA.N), whose F-18 was favoured by former German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer to replace the Tornado.

A decision to go with a U.S. fighter jet could upset France. Paris has been warily watching past German deliberations over whether to settle on the F-18 or the F-35, concerned it could undermine the development of a joint Franco-German fighter jet that is supposed to be ready in the 2040s.

It was not clear how many F-35 jets Germany may attempt to purchase.

Kramp-Karrenbauer had planned to buy 45 F-18s, but these were meant to replace both Tornado jets tasked with nuclear sharing as well as those for electronic warfare.

I am not surprised. Lockheed Martin needs more sales after it has tasted blood in Poland, Finland, and Japan. After failing at the UAE deal due to inter-governmental disagreements, they are naturally looking at a replacement.

A nudge to the White House to pressure Germany is almost natural. The Germans won't be able to say a "NO" to you guys for long. They literally depend on you guys for their political existence.

.
f-35=no political independence .You will only fight American enemies while paying American firms for procurement.

Makes perfect sense for Germany then.

Since WW2 ended, they are anyway a US outpost. No strategic autonomy beyond civilian trade (like Japan). They are not allowed to have their own strategic missiles, can't develop their own long-range aviation despite having full capability to do so, and has a history where their intelligence agencies spied against their own Chancellors for the Americans.

The germans act very indepent. Did not stop northstream 2, did not join iraq war, did block weapon delivery to ukraine.

Iraq was through and through a US-British operation with major involvement only from Turkey. Simply because Turkey is much more aware of the adjoining regions than the Anglophones. Germany was stationed in Afghanistan along with the rest of NATO teams.

The simple reason why they are not being pressured to stop Nordstream 2 yet, is because Russia is also thinking of the next move. Do you really think they will not cancel it the moment Russia strikes Ukraine? Once uncle sam orders, there is no turning back. France is the only Western power that is independent and is keeping diplomatic channels open with Russia. That, is called independence.

Where is the typhoon?
It does not make sense to induct EFTs at this stage when the entire West is preparing for 5th and 6th generation jet development/induction.

Typhoons are now limited to export orders, though even those seem to be drying up now. I guess the only country showing some interest in them is Bangladesh who might go for the Tranche 3 version according to some of their defense experts.

Germany is going to do what the US tells her to do. Period. I was categorical in saying that Germany has full autonomy when it comes to economy and trade and therefore might deviate. But once the missiles start flying, they will follow the US.

FYI Ukraine is not a part of EU or NATO. So technically, it is NATO that is intervening in a conflict where it has nothing to do. The entire Euromaidan fiasco was hijacked by MI6 and CIA right from the beginning. What started as a domestic movement initially, became a full-blown attempt at eastward expansion of the NATO+EU complement.

Ukraine is an Independent nation that wants to join nato and eu. Russia has no say in it.

Beside that Poland, Baltics would be next and want a strong answer for Russia.

The problem is, russia offers nothing, can offer nothing. Thats why all want escape

Germany will not buy F35, if any maybe few to please the US. The Germans want to develop own fighter jets with the French.

You said it. The Franco-German project is beyond 5th generation from what we know right now. They are taking the big leap. Expecting a jet around 2035-40 means that their older Tornados have not replacement jets.

F-35 is the only one that is 5th generation, in mass production, & convenient. Germany will replace its Tornados with F-35. The Franco-German jet will probably replace older Typhoons. My guess would be anywhere around 60-80 F-35s for the Luftwaffe.

And what are the timelines they are looking at? The window of replacement is closing and any new jet that they start with from scratch is at least going to take 15 years until they start inducting. Germans are efficient, but no matter how efficient, getting something new quicker than that is virtually impossible unless the R&D was done and ready years ago.

. .
Told ya!8-)

Germans cannot say no to American order for long. The Luftwaffe inducts the first fully foreign-made fighter jet in over 80 years.
