They are among India’s most important people, are regular fixtures on international rich lists and live lives most people would be envious of. Now, they are also looking for the kind of security PM Manmohan Singh and other VIPs in India get.

But in this case, they will pay for it.

Mumbai’s rich and famous are increasingly hiring retired SPG commandos as well as defence and paramilitary officers who have been part of the elite special protection group (SPG) to beef up their security.

A source close to Mukesh Ambani admitted that the billionaire is hiring military personnel above the rank of Colonel and some retired IPS officers who have been part of the PM’s security detail. “It’s routine practice to hire top security officers for his protection. We have a personal escort van to ensure safety and prevent any untoward incident. We do have a separate security department like other corporate houses. There is nothing special that we are doing,” the source told DNA, trying to downplay the trend.

The retired officers are certainly not complaining as they can get up to Rs 50,000 for an eight-hour shift.

The trend is catching on, say private security players. “There is an increasing demand by industrialists and politicians for specially trained commandos or retired officers of the paramilitary forces to look after their personal security,” said Vikash Verma, chairperson of the G7 Securitas Group. “Having handled security for the US president, the World Cup and other major events, we understand the advantages of hiring these commandos. The greatest advantage is that unlike freshers, they are already trained to protect people. We do not have to mould them.”

An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer said the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai brought into focus the high level of preparedness of the National Security Guards (NSG) and other commandos. “Specially trained forces came into the limelight. As a result, since then, industrialists and politicians are scurrying to recruit security personnel who have undergone that training. It is the latest status symbol,” the officer said.

A retired IPS officer, who has also served in the SPG, said the special force is divided in two segments; the first is a commando force that provides security to VIPs. The second includes senior officers involved in the planning process. “Commandos are specially trained to guard the body and close-to-body combat,” he said.

Why is this news? Many ex USSS, SAS, GREEN BERET, SEAL, MOSSAD etc go on to work in private sector doing similar work- Blackwater? And I really wish people would stop call in them "commandos" or special forces. They are not. They are very professional and capable at what they do- protection. They are an executive protection agency responsible for guarding the PM, his family and some Z+ VVIPS. End of story, if you look at the definition of commandos or special forces you will see the SPG doesn't fit into it- they don't want to, it isn't their job, they are reactionary in nature.

^^^ right the word "commando" should mean something, and should be earned. That is why Indian SF units wear their "Special Forces" tabs with such honour- it is not easy to earn it. As a US SF once said- "anyone can put a $2 piece of ribbon on their chest, it is what it represents that matters."
