Since the eatery is best known for its meaty burgers, there has always been a debate about whether popular franchises like these use kosher meat in their burgers or not. “We are importing about 50 per cent of the meat from the United States. This is from a company that supplies halal stuff. The rest of the 50 per cent of the meat is local.” On why 50 per cent is only imported from the US and not the rest, Rashid explains, “That’s expensive. We need to see the cost.”

Grand opening: Islamabad residents in for authentic Turkish cuisine

ISLAMABAD: The global food chain Ozsar Turkish Doner House officially launched an outlet at the Centaurus Mall on Friday.

Located next to Johnny Rockets, this latest addition to the sprawling food court promises authentic Turkish cuisine to food enthusiasts. The menu offers a variety of iskender and doner burgers, soups and salads and traditional doner.

Turkish doner and kebabs — made with freshly-minced lamb, beef or chicken — are often cooked on a rotating vertical broiler to allow the juices to drip down and caramalise on the surface. The meat is seasoned and wrapped in paper-thin Turkish bread, in similar fashion to shawarmas or gyros.

Meanwhile, iskander comprises a mixture of lamb and beef meat chunks, seasoning, yogurt and green chilli. The platter is served with rice, roti and vegetables.

The launch event also served a doner platter comprising bread with beef and veal chunks with Turkish naan. An assortment of traditional Turkish delights such as baklawa and coconut-filled chocolate truffles were served at the event.

However, Kemal Pasha, which is reminiscent of the syrupy and aromatic Gulab Jaman in South Asian cuisine, will be available on the menu. Vegetables, seasonings and dips lined the counter in a colourful presentation. Hummus, a popular appetiser came with a rich, creamy texture.

Turkish Ambassador Babur Girgin inaugurated the event. He said the doner reminded him of home and that he would be a frequent visitor at the mall now.

The outlet offers an ambient setting with crème-coloured couches placed close to the serving counter, overlooking the bustling mall in an open space. Thematic instrumental music played while ushers sporting crimson fez caps greeted guests, flashing smiles for photographs. DJ Xin hosted the event, encouraging guests to give their feedback on the culinary experience.

Humay Waseem, a food blogger who has lived in Turkey, said she has been eating at the outlet prior to the official launch of the food brand at the mall. “I really like the Turkish cuisine. It is light and healthy,” she added.

Chief-executive-officer of the brand Osman Ashraf said that he saw great potential for the Turkish cuisine in the country. “Pakistan and Turkey have enjoyed strong political ties, engagement in construction and entertainment industries so this is about taking that relationship forward,” he added. The brand will soon open branches in Lahore and Karachi.

Steak Escape has made its way to Pakistan all the way from Columbus, Ohio. Situated on main Badar commercial in Karachi's Defence Housing Authority (DHA), the outlet is hard to miss with its distinctive logo and the striking black and yellow lighting. It’s the first outlet of many more (within Karachi and outside) of an international chain brought to the metropolis via the Lalani brothers of Lalani Group.

Looks awesome. It's like the local rodeo avenue of Karachi. In the next 20 years, Karachi will be full of skyscrapers and cleaner, and will be the envy of the world.

I think Karachi looks better than Lahore in general -except for Mall road Lahore, which has no match in Pakistan- because Lahore was poorly planned and needlessly expanded. Lahore doesn't give the big city vibes, which it should considering its population. Too many open spaces there.

In the next 20 years, Karachi will be full of skyscrapers and cleaner, and will be the envy of the world.

i must say, skyscrapers are poor city planning and are ugly to look at.

- proper residential housing will be single/double storied houses set within a good-sized garden, and quiet areas.

- proper offices and markets should be designed as arab-souk/roman buildings, within which are trees and big skylight... this would look quite natural.

- there should be parks with shallow water bodies, designed like the alhambra complex...

The menu is basic – there are five types of beef burgers, with options of single patty or double patty, and four chicken burger options all available in single patty.

Within minutes we heard the sizzle of the grill, and the aroma of char-grilled beef fill the cafe. It did however take almost half an hour before our order was ready. Picking it up from the counter, we settled down and dug in.

Encased in a freshly made potato burger bun, The 'Texas Smokey Burger' was all about the meat – flavourful, juicy patties topped with lettuce, tomatoes and a slice of cheese, with onion rings giving it an interesting crunch.

The 'Honey Mustard Chicken Burger' was very basic – two pieces of crisp batter fried chicken, with lettuce and honey mustard sauce. The chicken fillets were fried to perfection. The chicken was crunchy yet moist, with no greasy aftertaste.
