Residents want girls college built on ruins of OBL compound – The Express Tribune

ABBOTABAD:
Residents have demanded that the government build a girls college at the site where the once-infamous compound of slain al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden once stood. Two days back, authorities started tearing down the triple-storey house where Bin Laden was hunted down by US Navy SEALs in a top secret operation in May, last year.

It is yet not clear what the government would do to the plot of land which, according to revenue records, belongs to one Arshad Khan.

“Our daughters, the future mothers, will disseminate the message of peace and non-violence across the area, if the authorities allow construction of a girls college on the land where the bitter memories of Bin Laden are buried,” said Rehmanullah a resident of Bilal Town.

The people of Abbottabad have been humiliated in front of the government and intelligence agencies for hosting Bin Laden in the garrisoned town, he said, adding that this was not the end of their suffering – residents of Bilal Town had to undergo psychological trauma as a result of the post-US raid security measures.

Is it not a private property? Otherwise good thought by recidents.

This reminds me of two similar requests made before.
1) Request by the Mahsuds to build an Engineering College in
2) Request by the people of FATA to be integrated by either
a-Being made a new separate province within Pakistan
b-Having FATA merged with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

When the Pakistani government ignored these requests these were the results:
1) South Waziristan became the mainstay of militants and the nerve center of the Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan.
2) FATA became a den for illegal activity and militancy and strife became a constant companion of the tribals in these areas. Each Tribal agency now has its own Taliban commander and faction. Bajaur has Faqir Mohammed, Kurram has Mullah Tufan, so on.

The government should not ignore this request by the locals or they may even lose Abottabad. The population has to be won over and the best way to win over a population is by development

amazing step because abbottabad is a medical/educational hub for the small villages and cities around, miss my hometown
