The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has released its latest analysis of the international arms market and it shows that there has been a significant increase in arms exports from the United States and France. Between the five-year periods from 2010 to 2014 and 2015 to 2019, international transfers of major arms increased by 5.5%. Between those periods, the U.S. grew its major arms exports by 23% while French arms exports soared 72%.

The U.S. now accounts for 36% of total global arms exports and between 2015 and 2019, its arms sales were 76% higher than those of the world's second-largest arms exporter, Russia. During that five-year period, the U.S. exported weapons to 96 countries, with around half of all sales going to customers in the Middle East. Half of those Middle Eastern arms exports went in turn to Saudi Arabia which is still clearly the world's largest arms importer, accounting for 35 percent of the global total since 2015. French arms sales reached their highest level for any five-year period since 1990 and it is the world's third-largest exporter, accounting for 7.9% of the global total.

Between 2010-2014 and 2015-2019, Russian arms exports fell by 18%, primarily due to a loss of traction in India. New Delhi has been a major customer for Russian military hardware for decades but in recent years it has been acquiring increasing quantities of western equipment. That has been the primary reason for the sharp fall in Russian exports, a fall which was not offset by increases in exports to Egypt and Iraq over the past five years. During the two five-year periods mentioned above, South Korea grew its arms exports by 143%, Israel's increased by 77% and Germany's went up 17%.
