The federal cabinet here on Thursday approved withdrawal of power tariff subsidy on agriculture tube wells in all four provinces to control the growing circular debt in the future.
Almost all four provinces as well as the federal government have defaulted on making payment on differential of power tariff subsidy on tube wells and this has made it difficult for the power sector entities to continue this facility. The cabinet approved the ratification of Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) among the D-8 Muslim countries consisting Bangladesh, Indonesia, Egypt, Iran, Turkey, Nigeria and Pakistan. The agreement envisages tariff reduction among the countries.
The federal cabinet took this decision after having a detailed briefing from Secretary Finance Dr Waqar Masood Khan, who briefed the cabinet on behalf of the Energy Committee headed by the finance minister. The cabinet was informed that the Ministry of Water and Power had launched a campaign in the country to recover the arrears of electricity charges from the defaulters regardless that they belonged to the private sector or the government.
The cabinet was informed that arrears worth Rs 300 billion are due against public sector and Rs 150 billion against private sector. The cabinet was informed that 200,000 connections were disconnected due to non-payment and 42,000 connections were restored after payments were made by defaulters.
