Reformist Jamaat-e-Islami leaders launch new political party

Reformist leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami have launched a new political party called Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party), a year after reentering the political fold on a fresh platform.

Ousted Jamaat leader Mojibur Rahman Monju, the coordinator of the political outfit Jana Akankhyar Bangladesh formed a year ago, unveiled the new party, with a 222-member convening committee, at a media briefing in Bijoynagar on Saturday.

AFM Solaiman Chowdhury, a former secretary, who resigned from Jamaat, will serve as the convener of the AB Party. Monju, former president of Islami Chhatra Shibir, Jamaat's student affiliate, has been made the member secretary of the committee.

“We have ignored the critics and from today our party is going to be called Amar Bangladesh Party," said Monju.

Retired Major Abdul Wahab Minar outlined the aims and objectives of the new party at the briefing. The party will strive to make Bangladesh a 'welfare state' by ensuring the basic and civic rights of every human being, irrespective of religion, caste and creed, according to him.

Monju said the convening committee will be tasked with forming district units while finalising the party's draft constitution and electing its leadership in line with democratic principles.

"We have launched a programme to provide food assistance to 20,000 endangered families with our limited resources. For now, the plan is to overcome this coronavirus situation by focusing on issues related to humanitarian services and formulate policies accordingly.”

The party will launch its activities after the coronavirus crisis ends, according to Monju.

Parties priority should be to grow the economy at a faster rate, improve it's education system, and provide loans to exceedingly promising students for further

There are tons of corporate Pakistani folks, students and businessmen working in Bangladesh. No one has been ill treated by local folks, rather warmly embraced. 1971 was 50 some odd years ago.

Narrative of ruling party is just a ploy to stay in power and to appease India.

The days are gone when some Party in name only comes along offering to resolve all problems in Bangladesh at the wave of a wand. New generation and much, much smarter well-informed electorate now.

Unless you have some substance and concrete solutions, just platitudes will not take you anywhere.

This is why Jamatis are losing, although they are the most non-corrupt, well-organized party in Bangladesh right now. Just basing your election platform on establishing Shariah law will not cut it. People need concrete solutions to today's issues like living-wage employment, exports, economic growth, development, technology in everyday life etc. Even Muslim countries like Malaysia and Indonesia (who are more developed) don't have these answers.

Jamatis in Bangladesh so far don't have the answers and need to come up with some. Otherwise people will ignore them except regarding Islamic topics.

You guys need to know that since 1999 (reformation period) until 2014 Indonesia is lead by Islamist and Nationalist Religious Parties coalition, except for 3 years under Megawati where Islamist and Secular Nationalist joining hand (2002-2004)

Between 1998-1999 (transition into full democracy), Indonesia is lead by BJ Habibie, one of Indonesian Islamist Leader.
