Rash of pneumonia cases hits Marshall County Schools

MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. — UPDATE: Marshall County Health Department officials say they are continuing to monitor pneumonia cases in the schools.

According to a news release from administrator Tom Cook, the outbreak is winding down, but new cases are still present.

The cases appear to be viral in nature and short-lived. Officials want to remind parents that if kids show any symptoms of being sick, keep them at home.

PREVIOUS: Marshall County Schools officials say they are jumping into action after a rash of pneumonia cases were reported throughout the county.

Cameron Elementary and Hilltop Elementary have been hit hardest.

In all, 48 cases have been identified, including both of Lisa Chambers’ kids. She says her kids will both stay home until the issue is fixed.

“There are several of us that have decided to keep our kids home from school until something is done, so that our kids do not get back what they already had or spread it to anyone else,” she said.

The school board says it has been busy trying to make sure the illness doesn't spread more.

Superintendent Shelby Haines says they've increased custodial staff and begun using an ionizer to clean all surfaces.

“We're using an improved cleaning agent that has been approved through the State Department, Health Department, to kill some of the bacteria that may be spreading anything like this,” Haines said.

The Marshall County Health Department is also doing its part, as it’s studying samples to find if this is a viral or bacterial problem.

They are also sending in their own people to evaluate the situation.

“The county has been proactive in their in cleaning techniques and everything that they're doing, but I have a sanitarian going out to Cameron and Hilltop as we speak to make sure the process is going fine,” Marshall County Health Department Administrator Tom Cook said.

Almost every school in the county has reported a case of pneumonia.

School and health officials say that if your child shows any symptoms of being sick, just keep them home.

Very suspicious timing. Seems like covid-19 was in America a lot earlier than people thought.
