ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways has earned Rs1 billion profit during 2012 through running of Shalimar, Business Express under the public-private partnership, according to a statement on Monday.
According to the annual report of the Railways, after receiving engines from various divisions, freight system has been put back on the track and closed trains on main and branch lines have been restored.
Repairing work of around 150 dangerous bridges is underway, it said.
As the federal government has released Rs6 billion, the purchase of spare parts for repair of engines has also been initiated. This would help bring around 100 engines back on the track within the next few months, according to the report.
Moreover, as part of the evacuation drive, Pakistan Railways has got vacated around 2,400 acres land from illegal occupants so far. All-out efforts are being made to improve the performance and efficiency of Railways and to make it a profit-earning organisation, it said.
The out-of-order locomotives are being locally repaired and overhauled at the Central Diesel Locomotive (CDL) workshop, the report added.
