Video: Red Arrows Pilot Dies In Incident At RAF Scampton In Lincolnshire Involving Hawk T1 Jet | UK News | Sky News

A Red Arrows pilot has become the second team member to die in a matter of weeks after he was ejected from his aircraft while it was on the ground.

Pictures from the scene at RAF Scampton, in Lincolnshire, shows part of the canopy of the Hawk T1 jet is missing.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said an investigation was under way and confirmed the plane was not airborne when the tragedy happened at 11am on Tuesday.

The pilot was airlifted to Lincoln County Hospital, but his injuries were so severe he could not be saved. His family have been informed and he is due to be named on Wednesday.

(can somebody correct the title please)

This is apparently the third incident of problems with the red arrows in the last 2 months and they have suspended all flights until the issues are resolved.

maintenance issues...probably not much money to keep the planes fit.

.
RIP to the pilot.

Weird! Why those ejection seats behave like that?

.
how did he die? "ejected from his aircraft while it was on the ground."! isn't it more easier then, your airplane is not moving you sit in the seat and eject?

Parachute takes time to open!?! u crash on ground frm very hard... without the chute... n ...... RIP!

.
most ejection seats are designed to fire you far enough for the chute...even if you're on the ground. A malfunction?

This aircraft uses a million dollar Martin Baker (world renowned) ejection seat which works on zero zero principle:

A zero-zero ejection seat is designed to safely extract upward and land its occupant from a grounded stationary position (i.e., zero altitude and zero airspeed), specifically from aircraft cockpits. The zero-zero capability was developed to help aircrews escape upward from unrecoverable emergencies during low-altitude and/or low-speed flight, as well as ground mishaps. Before this capability, ejections could only be performed above minimum altitudes and airspeeds.
Zero-zero technology uses small rockets to propel the seat upward to an adequate altitude and a small explosive charge to open the parachute canopy quickly for a successful parachute descent, so that reliance on airspeed and altitude is no longer required for proper deployment of the parachute.

.
I cannot believe that the seat was triggered by mistake. I believe you have to make a conscious effort to eject.

Could it have been suicide?
