China is completing the project of the planet’s longest, 2,000-kilometer quantum communication network from Beijing to Shanghai. The network is considered “unhackable” and is set to start operating in 2016.

The “unhackability” is due to the most secure encryption technology ever, the South China Morning Post reported.

By 2030, the network is expected to stretch all over the globe, Xinhua news agency said.

For now, the service is to be used by the Chinese government, the military and key business institutions such as banks.

The plans were disclosed by Professor Pan Jianwei, a quantum physicist with the University of Science and Technology of China and a lead scientist behind the project.

"China's quantum information science and technology is developing very fast and China leads in some areas in this field. Any city in China, as long they want to, can start to build the quantum communication network now," he said, Xinhua reported.

Chen Yuxiang, chief engineer for the construction of the Beijing-Shanghai network, indicated that the infrastructure would be ready between the end of the year and next summer. The network also needs to be built and activated.

The budget for the Beijing-Shanghai project is estimated at 100 million yuan ($16 million) for every 10,000 users.

Theoretically, the quantum network can’t be hacked: should anyone try to intercept the encryption key, the physical status of the quantum data, or qubits, would change, and alert those who sent the information.

Europe, Japan and Canada are also planning to start their own quantum networks. The US has also been looking for funds to sponsor a 10,000-kilometer network between major cities.

Experts are sure, though, that China is ahead of everyone in the quantum network project.

"The Chinese are really pushing the boundaries. They are moving at an incredible rate. No one else around the world has plans that are this ambitious," Raymond Laflamme, the head of the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo in Canada, told The Telegraph.

"China is putting itself in the position of having secure private information that other countries will not be able to tap," he added.

There is no such thing as hack proof!
It is the genius of human species, that if one makes a new technology or invents something, other one would try to counter it somehow, it all about evolution how a deer evolves to evade predators and in turn predators evolve to hunt the deer that evades it, its a continuous cycle of nature.
Anything can be hacked let this technology come out first and you shall see many hackers having a go at it.

Hack here means no one can tap into the network unauthorized. That is theoretically impossible. No amount of technological growth can change that.

Well even it will happen wait for the future and see it yourself.
Theoretically there are many things impossible but nature always triumphs in the end.

That's not how it works. If the theory of physics/mathematics say it can't happen, it can't happen. Unless you prove the theory wrong. Quantum mechanics seems to be working good till now.

This is not about building a super secretive paaword, fire wall or something to that effect. What happening here is that the protected system can't be accessed, period. It's the fundamental theory of quantum physics.

It's really surprising that China is moving so fast in this area. Wonder if China has made any leap in the quantum computing. That'd increase the computer speed and memory capacity over a 1000 fold!

Quantum physics was a recent phenomenon, people believed physics and gravity as constant but quantum physics changed their views, likewise we will discover new theories in future that will make even change quantum physics.
All you have to do is keep a open mind not fixed, there is no such thing as fixed. In nature, evolution and universe it is ever expanding and evolving. What is the norm today might not be the norm tomorrow.
Likewise what you think as inaccessible quantum computing will be accessed tomorrow when a new theory props up.
Human nature is such they will find solutions for everything, you just have to wait or live long enough to see it.

Nobody believed in quantum physics 100 years ago, it was only until some scientists made discoveries that propelled it onto global stage, right now quantum physics is enjoying the limelight it will be replaced by another new type of physics as we have not fully understood how universe works.
Many said faster than light is impossible but today there is progress in that field which might make us rethink our old concepts.
There are always new discoveries and theories.

Classical mechanics is still valid today. And there is no progress which can make us rethink the basic concepts of quantum mechanics/relativity or even classical mechanics. Nothing said in either theory within the bounds of their applications has been proven wrong.

When taking about topic - why this 'quantum network' can't be hacked? - because if someone else other than the intended party tries to tap in, the data itself will change, notifying the intended party. It is a mathematical theory, and maths is as absolute as god.

Concepts always change as you progress with time.
What if you fool the data into thinking you are the actual party who is accessing?
How will it change the data when you are the actual party?

God is beyond Mathematical equations thats a different topic though, lets not go there.

You seriously have no clue about quantum cryptography do you

The major advantage of quantum key distribution is on quantum channels, eavesdropping was easily detected by the sender and receiver due to orientation of photons.

However eavesdropping of quantum networks has already been achieved by a Norwegian researcher - Vadim Makarov

Hackers blind quantum cryptographers : Nature News

The only advantage now of quantum cryptography is the sophistication required is very high for a successful eavesdropping.

Major disadvantage of quantum channels are -
-Very easy to tamper them and render them non-functional.
-Building and maintenance is expensive.

Then explain 0/0 ;)

From your link:
"We have exploited a purely technological loophole that turns a quantum cryptographic system into a classical system, without anyone noticing," says Makarov.

Theory is is perfect, its applications may not be! For example here the hacker was able to access the detector, ideally it should not be the case.

Honestly, yeah, I am not that knowledgeable about this field, last time I studied any of it was 6 years ago, just theory (concepts) and for extra curriculum. And that is why I am just talking about theory, I have no clue how they are turning it into practice.
