Qatar playing the role of regional power slams Israeli settlements
The Emir of Qatar embraced the Hamas leadership of Gaza on Tuesday with an official visit that broke the isolation of the Palestinian Islamist movement, to the dismay of Israel and rival, Western-backed Palestinian leaders By visiting the Hamas-ruled Gaza on Tuesday, Qatars emir demonstrated a long-standing policy of boosting both the regional influence of his state, analysts said.
Qatar saw the Arab revolutions as an opportunity rather than a threat, said Brookings Doha director Salman Shaikh.
They understood where the centre of gravity of the region is, instead of the others who were trying to maintain the old order.
According to Shaikh, Qatars support for the Islamists is not purely dogmatic or ideological.
The Gulf state has built relationships over decades with the Islamists because there was a feeling these people had integrity and capability compared.
Since his rise to power in 1995, Shaikh Hamad has hosted several Islamist leaders while Qatars Al Jazeera pan-Arab news broadcaster has provided an open platform for them to air their views.
