ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) parliamentary committee officially nominated party chairman Imran Khan for the office of prime minister on Monday.

Imran to be formally nominated as PM today

The confirmation came in a meeting of the party’s parliamentary board in Islamabad where PTI vice-president Shah Mehmood Qureshi tabled the resolution to nominate Imran for Pakistan’s next prime minister. The motion was unanimously approved in the meeting attended by all newly-elected members of the National Assembly and Senate.

Addressing the parliamentary body, Imran said the nation had defeated political status-quo by rejecting two-party system prevailing since the 1970s. “Rarely can a third political party makes space for itself.”

He said the masses no longer believed in conventional politics. “We will be held accountable by our voters if we stick to conventional governance structure,” he said. “Our struggle will create the future of Pakistan. The first phase of my 22-year-old struggle is completed, we are set for second stage.”

The cricketer-turned-politician said he will be holding weekly question and answer sessions as practiced by the British prime ministers. He promised to make ministers accountable as well.

In post-meeting press conference, Qureshi denied reports that he was pegged as Speaker of the National Assembly. “There have been reports based on hearsay. The central media cell will inform if there is any development.” He urged the masses wait for official confirmation from the party. “Imran is the leader of the party, he is the captain, and whoever he deploys for any post would readily accept the role.”

Qureshi said the independents had also attended the meeting. He revealed that the party had reached the number needed to form majority in the August House. “PTI’s representation is not restricted to the centre but we have presence in all four provinces.”

Dwelling further, he remarked that the members of the opposition had nothing in common. “What does Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) have in common?” he asked. “The fear of losing status quo is united them together. The alliance is unnatural and temporary. We do not expect it to stand for long.”

Responding to the war of words between PTI Sindh chapter and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), Qureshi asserted that the MQM-P had dissociated itself with its founder Altaf Hussain hence PTI decided to partner with them to uplift and develop Karachi.

On the talks between Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), the PTI vice-president said the party was deliberating over six points put forward by Sardar Mengal.
