Khar likely to enter into another political marriage
By Hussain Kashif

LAHORE: Founding member of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), close ally of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and former Punjab governor Ghulam Mustafa Khar is likely to go into another political marriage as people close to him have revealed to Daily Times that Khar was considering joining the newly emerging Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf within a couple of days.

According to sources related to the seasoned politician, a special one on one meeting between Ghulam Mustafa Khar and PTI Chairman Imran Khan had already been held some days before and both leaders had decided to walk together.

Sources said that it had been decided that Ghulam Mustafa Khar would announce his decision to join the party in the presence of Imran Khan in a public meeting along with his family members, who are also playing an active role in politics at different levels.

The public meeting would most probably be held in some area of southern Punjab, like Muzaffargarh or Multan.

PTI sources, while confirming the meeting between both leaders, said that Imran Khan was going to hold a public meeting in Shujabad (near the Multan district) on November 26 and that there was a possibility that Khar, along with others, would announce his decision to join the party. Seasoned politician Ghulam Mustafa Khar has already changed his affiliation with different political parties several times. Recently, he was an ally of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif.

Born in 1937 in Muzaffargarh, Khar was jailed during General Ziaul Haq’s martial law. Later, he slipped out of the country after an understanding with General Chishti (a Ziaul Haq aide).

Returning to Pakistan before 1988, Khar had by then fallen out with Benazir Bhutto and, with the backing of the army, created the National Peoples Party (NPP) along with Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi and other PPP dissidents. After some time, he rejoined the PPP before the 1993 elections and after being re-elected, served as federal minister for water and power under Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Defeated in the 1997 election, he was unable to contest the 2002 elections because of a restriction placed on non-graduates, preventing them from contesting in elections.

In 2007, Khar was removed from the PPP by Benazir Bhutto due to his controversial statements regarding the deal between Benazir and General Musharraf. He also had a war of words with PPP Secretary General Jehangir Badar, who called him a political orphan.

Ghulam Mustafa Khar is one of the well-known landlords of the country and has been married numerous times. His seventh marriage was with Tehmina Durrani, who later wrote a book titled ‘My Feudal Lord’ on her husband after obtaining a divorce, in which she describes the alleged abuse meted out to her by Khar. Tehmina Durrani later married current Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

Close associates of Ghulam Mustafa Khar have accused him of always remaining in search of new horizons, whether the horizon involves a life partner or a political party.

Khar family is very influential in Muzzafargarh and its surroundings . Again a sad reality , unless voting reforms take place IK can never win without such heavy weights who may also bring 'heavy baggage'. Thick or thin We stand by IK.

only Imran can defeat Imran.

before you rejoice, let it be confirmed, If so a sad news and we will resist this....

nowadays everyone wants to be in PTI. even tahir-ul-qaddari said so, yesterday

anyhow unlike your previous attempt about SQM which met failure. *(while you thought meeting Nawaz is like joining Nawaz  )

wait and see, how PTI clean sweeps into Power. :pakistan:

Expect some more good news of another high-ranking influential person joining PTI tomorrow InshAllah

Umm... Joinng of Quraishi, and Khar into PTI. This will be very interesting... But won't they be asked to declare their assets? Aren't they both landlords and isn't this what IK and its party oppose?.

My understanding is that IK is now desperate to come to power and he will change his political direction by hiring corrupt politicians.

Qureshi didn't give into US pressure during the Raymond Davis fiasco and he loves his country and cares about his people (unlike zardari and co.) I dont know much about Khar but I trust Imran Khan's decision.

And its totally naive to belive that a country like Pakistan can be 100% uncorrupt and everyone in this political party will be 100% uncorrupt. PTI wont accept members that are known big thieves like zardari and nawaz, but theres nothing wrong in accepting the least corrupt people who want to change. These members will have to agree to PTI's principles, and PTI is serious in fighting corruption.

Not only Khar but all like him must be kept away if IK really wants to bring the change. I really cant understand his stance that "every one can join PTI but tickets will be given to such and such people" why even people with shady characters should be accepted while most of them are joining to secure their political future. Now, if they are not given tickets, what would be their role in the party?

People can change too...

Besides, PTI said they must declare their assets first. Dont forget Imran Khan is the politican who said all corrupt politicians should be hanged.
