Protests, clashes in many towns across Kashmir

At least four persons, including a journalist, were injured in Pulwama town of south Kashmir as protests turned violent after Friday congregational prayers.
Clashes were also reported from Tral, Shopian and Qazigund townships of South Kashmir.
Hurriyat (G) Chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani had called for peaceful protests after Friday prayers against the desecration of Holy Quran in Gool area of Ramban by Border Security Forces (BSF) personnel and consequent killing of our innocent civilians.
Reports said that violent clashes between the forces and the protesting youth erupted in many areas of Pulwama town, including Main Chowk, Rajpora Chowk, Murran Chowk and Tahab Chowk.
“The police and the CRPF resorted to tear smoke shelling and baton charge to quell the protestors who retaliated by pelting stones,” reports said.
They said that four people including a local journalist Muhammad Ashraf were injured during clashes. The injured were being treated at District Hospital Pulwama.
Violent clashes were also witnessed in the Tral town of Pulwama district. People were protesting against the desecration of Quran. Police resorted to baton charge and fired tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters.
Protests were also witnessed in Shopian town with reports of sporadic stone pelting. “Soon after the Friday prayers people in large numbers took out a pro-freedom demonstration from Tak Masjid which marched through streets of the town and culminated at Gole Chowk,” witnesses said. They said that later in the day youth pelted stones on the forces near Deputy Commissioners Office, however, they were chased away.
In the highway town of Qazigund in Islamabad district a complete shutdown was observed.
Reports said that shops and other commercial establishments remained closed throughout the day while the movement of traffic was also affected, “Clashes between forces and the locals were also reported from the area early in the morning,” witnesses said.
GHULAM MUHAMMAD ADDS FROM SOPORE: Sopore area of district Baramulla and Kralpora town of frontier district of Kupwara witnessed protest rallies and clashes on the call given by Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
Reports said soon after Friday prayers, hundreds of people in Kralpora town took to streets and held anti-establishment protests. Police and paramilitary troopers intercepted them, triggering clashes. The protestors pelted stones on forces and at least two vehicles of Army were damaged.
In Sopore, a protest rally was taken out from Jamia Masjid and people chanted pro-freedom slogans. The protestors dispersed peacefully.
Baramulla police fired scores of tear gas shells this afternoon to quell a group of protesters who were resorting to stone-pelting soon after the Friday prayers in the town.
A group of youth gathered near the cement bridge after the Friday prayers and started protesting. The protesting youths were prevented from crossing over the bridge leading to clashes between the police and the youth. Police fired scores of tear gas shells to quell the protesters. The clashes were continuing till late evening.
In Srinagar reports said that clashes erupted in Saraf Kadal and Bemina areas of Srinagar. Reports said that groups of youth in these areas took to streets and held anti-establishment protests. Police intercepted them triggering clashes. There were no reports of injury to anybody.
