Protests after Army men ‘thrash’ civilians in Kashmir - NATIONAL - The Hindu
Four civilians, including a woman, were allegedly thrashed by Army men during a counter-insurgency operation on Monday, sparking violent protests in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, 40 km from here.
Protesters, who staged a demonstration outside the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Bandipora, accused the Army 14 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) of picking up seven persons from Zabn Gujjar basti in Chuntimulla area, several kilometres from the town.
Four persons, including a mother-son duo, were allegedly injured in the Army interrogation, according to locals.
Three injured were identified as Junaid Ahmed Khan, Ghulam Hussain Khan and Sakeen, wife of Lateef Khan.
Protesters carried two injured civilians, who were bleeding profusely, to the district headquarters as the area has no motorable road.
Raising anti-Army slogans, villagers from Arin, Kunan, Chuntimullha and Kudara attempted to take out a march, which was foiled by the CRPF with teargas and cane-charge.
"The Army hit women with gun butts in front of thousands of local people,” alleged the protesters.
The Army had launched an operation in the area in the morning.
No Army spokesman in Srinagar could be reached despite repeated attempts. There were reports of protesters pelting stones at the Army camp too.
Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Sajjad Hussain Ganaie, said an inquiry had been ordered into the incident. The police will file an FIR on the incident.
‘Bring them to book’
The Opposition National Conference (NC) condemned the “torture of four civilians.”
“Such incidents discredit the dividends of peace and yet again underline the need for revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA),” said NC spokesperson Junaid Mattu. The NC demanded that the district administration identify the culprits and bring them to book.
He said the State government’s refusal to press for withdrawal of AFSPA could send out a message of impunity that could have severe consequences in the State.
“While the PDP demanded revocation of AFSPA when in the Opposition, it has shelved it after entering into an alliance with the BJP,” Mr. Mattu alleged.
Two siblings injured
In a separate incident, two brothers were injured after the Army allegedly thrashed them in the frontier district of Kupwara, more than 90 km from Srinagar.
The incident took place during a search and cordon operation in Rajpora.
