Protest over pesticides in PEPSI, Coca Cola

Coke responds to India pesticide charges

ATLANTA - The Coca-Cola Co. is running ads in several newspapers in India to counter renewed allegations its drinks have high levels of pesticides.

The move comes after the government of India's western Gujarat state asked state-run colleges and schools not to allow sales of Coke and Pepsi soft drinks on their premises.
Coke is running an advertisement in several newspapers in India that say Coke has had tests conducted in independent laboratories and found its products "meet with all Indian and international applicable standards, including those being considered by the regulators in India."

India's Supreme Court on Friday asked Coke and Pepsi to disclose the ingredients in their drinks. The request came a couple of days after a New Delhi-based environmental group, the Center for Science and Environment, said it tested Coke and Pepsi products and found pesticide levels 24 times higher than what is allowed.

"We have looked very hard at this for three years, and all the data and all the science point to the fact that our products are absolutely safe," Pepsi spokesman Dick Detwiler said Monday.

The pesticide challenge is one of several Atlanta-based Coke faces in India.
The country, while not a big soft drink market, would seem to have a lot of growth potential. But Indians consume an average of only eight 8-ounce soft drink servings per year, compared with an average of 837 for Americans, according to Beverage Digest statistics.

And Coke has seen its sales volume decline in the market recently. In the second quarter, volume slipped 12 percent compared with the same period in 2005. In the first quarter, volume fell 10 percent.

In addition to the pesticide controversy, the company has been accused of damaging India's water supply. Also, Coke raised prices in the country this year, which hurt sales, according to the company.

Neo,

Please give links so that we know which country is it from.

Media bias has to be taken into account.

Thanks.

There is a problem with these soft drinks and there is no doubt about that.

They have been independently checked and the Govt was supposed to be bringing out some regulation on the standards.

Facts on Pesticide Allegations in India

The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), an India-based environmental advocacy organization, this week released findings from a national study alleging that soft drinks in India contain unsafe levels of pesticides.

The Coca-Cola Company maintains that our products in India are absolutely safe. Over the past three years, we have analyzed water, sweeteners and other ingredients used to make our products, and also finished products – including Coca-Cola, Thums Up, Sprite and Limca – and concluded that no detectable pesticides could be found. We are now obtaining additional samples from our bottling operations in India and will test these samples at labs in the United States and in the UK.

The Company has an uncompromising commitment to product safety and quality. In India and around the world, our plants use a multiple barrier filtration system to remove potential contaminants and unwanted natural substances, including pesticides, from the water we use. Additionally, our sugar is subjected to hot carbon treatment to eliminate pesticide residue and other contaminants.

Our products in India and the ingredients we use to make them are subject to stringent quality checks to ensure they meet rigorous global standards. These checks include testing for pesticides.

We are confident in the safety of the beverages we offer consumers in India and around the world....

Colas banned in Karnataka schools, hospitals

BANGALORE: Karnataka on Wednesday decided to ban the sale of 11 brands of soft drinks including Pepsi and Coca-Cola in educational institutions and hospitals from August 14 in the wake of a NGO's claim that the beverages contained high levels of pesticide residues.

The sale of Pepsi, Coca Cola, Mirinda, Mountain Dew, Diet Pepsi, Pepsi Blue, Fanta, Limca, Sprite, Thums Up, and 7UP will be banned within 100 metres of all schools, colleges and hospitals across the state, Health Minister R Ashok and Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti told a press conference.

The state has sought the Centre's opinion on slapping a total ban on the sale of soft drinks, Ashok said. Junk foods like pizzas and burgers have also come under the government scanner, he said.

An analysis of the soft drinks at a laboratory indicated that they contained chemicals and pesticides - including linadane, DDT, malathion and chlorpyrifos - in higher quantities than the stipulated norms, the ministers said.

Ashok said cases would be filed against the soft drink manufacturing firms under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act.

There were reports that packaged drinking water of various brands too contained high levels of DDT and action will be initiated against the manufacturers, he said.

Now that is a good news sepcially complete ban should be put onm these colas .Pakistan should also look into this.

What about the kind of soft drinks we are having here in European and western countries. Do they contains same chemicals and stuff which is harmful. I am talking about short term affects.

I am talking about soft drinks my dear. I know that chemicals are also added in cola but a fly in cola bottle indicates their hygenic level and quality.

Jana,

No one asked the people to drink it.

There are poisons like pesticides and insecticides available in the market too.

How many take it willingly?

This is an extra sensitive forum. Even D U M B came out as ****

I just hope your and my names also do not come out as ******** after this post! :)
You can't say to people "You can always not drink soda". I believe every government carries a Health department which is responsible to keep unsafe stuff away.

People shouldn't have to complain, the government should've spotted this not the people. This just means there are no tests being carried out.

As Bull's link suggests, the local coca cola operations incharge's are paying off the people doing the quality checks (since they are happening) and now coca cola has decided to bring the bottles to UK and the US where more trustable people can test stuff out.

Now the post is appropriate.

The main thing is that dont comsider the droinks in EU/US and India to have the same test results,as many have said the drinks in west are much more stronger than in India were its more dilute and so the ingredients also would be different.
