ISLAMABAD: Government would establish three modern land ports authorities in Torkham, Chaman and Wagah borders for exploiting the regional trade potential.

Minister for Commerce Khurram Dastgir Khan addressing a national conference on ‘Pakistan in Post 2014 Geo-Political Regional Scenario: Exploiting Trade and Business Potential for Peace Building in Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA) organised by FATA Research Centre on Tuesday said government would soon table a bill in the Parliament for the establishment of the land port authorities.

He said government was determined for the development of FATA and introduced many reforms for the socio-economic uplift of the people of the area.

The government, he said has initiated mega developmental projects in education, health care and skill development sectors of FATA to bring the people in economic mainstream.

Dastgir said about 22-kilometer border with Afghanistan was passing through FATA, connecting the country trade route with Central Asian States.

He said the government would develop communication links including roads network and open more commercial points in these areas for the commercialisation of indigenous resources in FATA.

Regional trade and connectivity was seriously started and the government has signed several agreements with regional countries to promote trade and investment.

Peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan was in favour of Pakistan and the country was acting on the neutral policy about Afghanistan.

Pakistan was ready to start trade talks with India when new regime would be set-up, the trade negotiation would also be initiated with open heart and country’s interest would be protected.

Minister for Textile Industry Senator Abbas Khan Afridi called for utilising the natural resources of FATA for the development of the area and checking the menace of terrorism.

He said textile industry has started training programmes for women of that area and their produces would be facilitated to export in international markets.

He emphasised that the only solution for improving state of affairs in tribal regions lie in democratisation of the tribal areas and bringing them at par with rest of the country in terms of political freedom and development.

He said under the directives of Prime Minister, a university, Cadet college and sport complex would also be established to exploit the talent of that area.

Danish Ambassador Jesper Sorensen said Denmark’s support to FRC was aimed at encouraging research work on FATA, develop a knowledge bank and bring forward local issues to the national discourse.

We fully recognise the people of Pakistan has suffered more from terrorism than perhaps any other nation, he added.

He said it was important vibrant economic activities were created in FATA and these were most important to the consolidation of peace. It is also the best prevention to curb militant influence on the youth.

We should focus on supporting reconstruction, redressing inequality and create conducive environment that will bring sustainable economic transformation, provide employment and foster hope, he added.
