Race for Project-75I is heating up and Request for Proposal (RFP) for 6 Conventional Diesel Submarine equipped with Air-independent propulsion (AIP) to be built in India based on foreign technology is set to be issued shortly.
Alexey Rakhmanov President of United Shipbuilding corporation (Russia) has fired first Salvo at Project-75I tender and Speaking to an Indian Defence magazine confirmed that Russia and BrahMos Aerospace have agreed to Integrate SLCM variant of BrahMos Cruise missile if Indian Navy desires so and confirmed that Russian developed variant of Air-independent propulsion (AIP) and India’s DRDO developed AIP technologies are similar and both will be offered and can be Integrated into the Submarine.
Rakhmanov also said pointing at delays caused in Project-75 where due to lack of local expertise French designed lead ship INS Kalvari (S23) which was recently ‘undocked’ suffered 3-year delays, Rakhmanov said going for Same route again in Project-75I will create difficulties for local shipyard to absorb transfer of technology to maintain delivery schedule since not many shipyards in India have Submarine building expertise which may result in rise in cost of project and delays in its implementation .
Rakhmanov thinks that it could be good move to build Lead ship in the Country which wins the contract so that issues related to subcontractors or supply of crucial equipment can be resolved at the Site by the Design office and it will also help train Indian Specialist from Local Shipyard which will be selected to build submarines .
Russia most likely will offer Amur-1650 an Export variant of lada-class Submarines designed by Russan Ministry of Defence which can be equipped with AIP technologies. While Rakhmanov might have made a good suggestion and also as per original Plans Indian Navy wanted first Two ships to be built at Foreign Shipyards to fasten up delivery schedule but after PM Modi’s Make in India push in Defence, it might not happen and all Six Submarines might have to be built in Indian Shipyards to give boost and build capabilities of Private Shipyards which are grossly underutilized due to lack of orders .
